❀ The Good News ❀

. . . . . . . . . .
Stop watching the News on T.V. filled with lies, propaganda, and made to make you feel helpless and afraid.

With all the negative news in the world, it's time to give you hope and inspiration. It's time to the weekly Good News!

Animal Euthanasia on the Chopping Block in Colorado
Attorneys from the not-for-profit organization AnimalsVote.org have submitted a ballot proposal called the Colorado No-Kill Pet Animal Act, which, if passed, would essentially make Colorado the first no-kill state in the nation. Animals Vote was founded on the belief that “the killing and the suffering of animals in deference to our own behest and gratification is an impediment to the moral and social progress of mankind.”
And you can Help Make Colorado the First No-Kill State by Signing Here

Victory! New York Cracks Down on Puppy Mills
At the beginning of January, a commercial breeder in Sprakers, N.Y., drew the ire of dog lovers for leaving dozens of small and medium sized dogs and puppies outside with nothing more than empty plastic barrels to keep warm as temperatures plummeted well below zero. Photos of the dogs at Flat Creek Border Collies were spread around Facebook, and a firestorm ensued. Canine advocates called on local law enforcement to investigate complaints about the breeder. The Lexus Project got involved and took the case to court.
Since then most of the dogs have been removed and are being cared for by the Montgomery County SPCA, the New England Border Collie Rescue and Glen Highland Farm. The owner was allowed to keep puppies on the condition that they be brought inside if the temperature falls below 32 degrees, but things won’t be finalized until January 21 when everybody heads back to court and the owner answers to the charge of not providing adequate shelter – which comes with a maximum fine of a whopping $100.
The good news is Governor Andrew Cuomo finally signed A.740a, dubbed the puppy mill bill, which will help crack down on large-scale commercial breeders in the state by granting counties and municipalities the ability to enact tougher regulations than the ones that exist at the state level to protect dogs raised in puppy mills.

Great News: PETA Closes Second Set of Bear Pits: New Life for 17 Bears‏
17 bears have been rescued from what would have been a life sentence in miserable concrete pits in Helen, Georgia. Thanks to a collaborative effort on the part of PETA, PETA patron and The Simpsons co-creator Sam Simon, the Wild Animal Sanctuary, and the Atlanta Humane Society, the bears now enjoy a full life in Colorado. They are now roaming acres of natural habitat at The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keenesburg, Colorado, where they are already rolling in the grass, racing around their fields, and enjoying relative freedom and fresh mountain air in a stunning 60-acre habitat.

Pit Bull Owner Takes Up Fight Against Breed Bans in Oregon
A potential breed ban in Medford, Ore., has divided residents and ignited debate about whether banning pit bulls will do anything to improve safety in their community.
Medford resident and pit bull owner, Tyler Woodard created a Care2 petition urging the City Council to focus on owners with aggressive dogs, instead of unfairly targeting pit bulls because of their breed. Woodard is calling for public support and asking canine experts to come forward to offer testimony about the breed and why breed bans are ineffective.
Numerous other organizations have also already come out against breed bans, including the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Animal Control Association, the Association of Pet Dog Trainers, the American Kennel Club, the American Veterinary Medical Association, the National Association of Dog Obedience Instructors and the International Association of Canine Professionals, among others.
Last summer, the White House also came out with an official statement against breed bans stating that “research shows that bans on certain types of dogs are largely ineffective and often a waste of public resources.”

More Than 20 Retailers Have Dropped Angora!
Things are moving extremely fast in the campaign against angora. More and more companies are listening to their customers and ditching angora after shocking video footage released by PETA and its international affiliates showed how rabbits are abused on Chinese angora farms. It's such an amazing movement when we see the power of people changing the minds of so many retailers around the world about such vital issues.

Palm Oil Company Gets What it Deserves for Destroying Orangutans’ Home
An Indonesian court issued a big blow to a palm oil company for illegally destroying forest land in Sumatra’s protected Leuser Ecosystem, which provides critical habitat for orangutans and other endangered species.
In what’s being called a groundbreaking verdict, the court found palm oil company PT Kallista Alam guilty of illegally burning large areas of the Tripa peat forest in the province of Aceh and ordered it to pay roughly $30 million in fines. An estimated $20 million was allocated for restoration efforts. The court also confiscated land and will be charging a fine for every day the palm oil company delays repayment, reports the Environmental News Service.

China Takes a Commendable Stance Against Elephant Poaching
On January 6th, China took a huge public stand against elephant poaching by crushing over six tons of the ivory it has confiscated in a landmark ceremony held in the city of Guangzhou.
The event marks the first time the country has destroyed any of its ivory stock and is being applauded by conservationists, government agencies and environmental protection organizations around the world for raising awareness about the poaching crisis and sending a message to the public that the illegal trade in ivory will not be tolerated.

VICTORY! Radio Disney drops "Rocking in Ohio"‏
Big news! After hearing from more than 100,000 parents and concerned citizens like you, Radio Disney has pulled out of "Rocking in Ohio," which promoted fossil fuels to kids in school in a song and game filled roadshow.
This is an important victory! But the fight isn't over: Disney runs science education programs in schools across the country and, so, they need to commit to not promote fossil fuels in any of their science and energy outreach to schools and kids.
Now is a key moment to share the news and to let Radio Disney know they need to publicly promise to support kid-safe, climate-safe energy!

Cyclists, Rejoice: Protected Bike Lanes Are Being Built More Safely--and that means More People Cycling!
Physically separated bike lanes are awesome. They’re good for safety, they increase the number of people who cycle, they’re good for business, etc. What’s not to like?
But good things can get better. There’s been a boom in protected bike lanes in the U.S. in the past ±5 years, and most of them use parked cars or plastic poles to keep the bike lane separated from the car lanes. That works, but it’s not ideal, and so the next generation of protected bike lanes have started to use more permanent curbs to protect cyclists.

YEESSS! The EPA just announced the first-ever, federal limits on climate change-causing carbon pollution from new power plants!
Big news! The EPA has announced the first-ever, federal limits on carbon pollution from new power plants.
Now the EPA needs to hear from millions of Americans like you in order to stand strong in the face of powerful opposition from Big Coal and its allies.
Be sure to click Here to fill out the form to submit a public comment telling the EPA you support these groundbreaking safeguards against carbon pollution. (takes two seconds of your time ;))

Washington D.C.’s Sewage Will Soon Generate Electricity
Construction has begun in D.C. on a 17.2 foot-high sea wall designed to protect its Blue Plains wastewater treatment facility from a 500-year storm surge that could otherwise flood D.C. with raw sewage. The sea wall will cost an estimated $13.2 million and is expected to be completed in 2021.
But, D.C. Water is also investing $450 million on an on-site digester that will transform its daily 120 tons of treated solid waste into enough natural gas to keep the plant running even if extreme weather knocks out power to the area.

Rejected! Even Uganda’s President Dislikes the Anti-Gay Bill
Care2 Success: More than 46,000 Care2 members have signed a petition calling on President Museveni to reject the bill.
Thank you to everyone who signed but please keep passing this petition around and make sure Uganda knows that no watering down of the bill could ever make it acceptable!

Safeway Moves Towards Eliminating Gestation Crates
In more good news for animal welfare, yet another major company has stepped up to the plate with a pledge to eliminate gestation crates, also known as gestational crates, from its pork farming practices. Supermarket chain Safeway told its suppliers to start preparing alternatives to meet demand, as it intends to phase gestation crates out of its supply chain.

More Good News for Angora Rabbits: Zara suspends orders of angora‏
Zara has suspended all orders for products containing angora wool until each supplier has been inspected.
Almost 300,000 members of the SumOfUs.org community signed the petition to Zara, urging it to respond to horrific video footage released by PETA that shows angora rabbits being tortured for their fur. Thousands commented on the Zara Facebook page; 330 joined SumOfUs' Super Bunny Warrior Team; and others were brave enough to talk to Zara staff in-store. It worked!

Success! Charges in Dog Dragging Case Upgraded to Felony Cruelty
The efforts of compassionate Care2 readers have helped changed the course of an animal cruelty prosecution. The man accused of dragging a young pit bull for more than a mile behind his pickup truck in late November now faces a felony rather than a misdemeanor criminal charge.
Roger Dennis Owens was charged with felony “ill treatment of animals” on December 17. Owens had originally been arrested on December 6 and charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty, an offense that carries a maximum penalty of only 90 days in jail and an $800 fine. Owens is also now charged with two counts of driving under suspension and two counts of being a habitual traffic offender. The felony cruelty charge could bring Owens from six months to five years in prison. If convicted of multiple offenses, he may face significantly more time.
Meanwhile, Andra Grace, the pit bull, is recovering nicely. Though she was badly injured, her condition is so much improved that she was moved to her new foster home in time for Christmas.

Los Angeles First City to Mandate Energy-Saving Cool Roofs
Los Angeles is set to have the coolest roofs in the country, but it has nothing to do with how awesome the architecture is. Following a unanimous decision by the LA City Council, all new (or refurbished) roofs in the nation’s second largest city will utilize “cool” roof technology.

Exxon Faces Criminal Charges Over 50,000 Gallon Fracking Waste Spill
Exxon Mobil Corp. subsidiary XTO Energy is faced with criminal charges for allegedly dumping tens of thousands of gallons of hydraulic fracturing waste at a Marcellus Shale drilling site in 2010, according to a Pennsylvania judge’s ruling last week.

New York City Bans Use of Styrofoam
New York’s City Council voted unanimously to ban the use of polystyrene (Styrofoam) containers. New York is now the largest U.S. city to implement such a ban on single-use foam containers.

Catholic Teens Protest Firing of Gay Vice Principal
What should be a depressing story about yet another employee of the Catholic Church being fired for being gay actually has an uplifting twist:  the youth community rallying in support of same-sex marriage.
In a refreshing sign of the changing times, teenagers in Washington walked out of school to protest discrimination against the termination of their vice principal. We’re not just talking the Gay-Straight Alliance either – hundreds of students participated, nearly the entire student body, along with some faculty members, as well.

Social Security Just Got a Bit More Gay Friendly
The Social Security agency has announced it will be expanding its recognition of same-sex married couples, yet another example of how the administration is continuing to apply the Supreme Court’s landmark anti-DOMA ruling.
On December 16, the Social Security Administration announced that it will now be able to process certain claims made by same-sex married partners.

New Mexico’s Supreme Court Says Yes to Marriage Equality!
The Supreme Court of New Mexico ruled on Thursday that the state’s constitution means the state cannot deny marriage recognition to same-sex couples, effectively legalizing gay marriage.
The decision should take effect immediately. New Mexico joins 16 other states and the District of Columbia in recognizing same-sex marriage.

President Obama Signs Bill to Combat Sexual Assault in the Military
The day after Christmas, President Obama signed a defense bill with provisions to curb sexual assault in the U.S. military. Under the new law, anyone who engages in sexual assault will face dishonorable discharge, commanders are prevented from reversing jury decisions, legal assistance will be provided for victims, and “retaliation” against a victim will be punished.

❀ The Good News ❀

. . . . . . . . . .
Stop watching the News on T.V. filled with lies, propaganda, and made to make you feel helpless and afraid.

With all the negative news in the world, it's time to give you hope and inspiration. It's time to the weekly Good News!
. . . . . . . . . .

Lots to catch up on! I'll be filling in all the awesome news we've missed over the next couple of weeks! ;)

Victory! Canada’s Iconic Prairie Bird Receives Emergency Protection
Nature Canada joined several conservation groups in applauding the federal government’s issuing of an emergency order to protect the Greater Sage-Grouse, a prairie-dwelling bird that is on the brink of extinction in Canada. This marks the first time an emergency order has ever been issued by the federal government to protect an endangered species.
Nature Canada conservation and legal experts were pleased to note that the emergency order may stop harmful new oil and gas developments in sensitive areas of Sage-Grouse habitat. All told, the order applies to approximately 1,700 square kilometers of land in Alberta and Saskatchewan, protecting the affected areas from many kinds of harmful construction.

International Leaders Make Commitments to Help Polar Bears
Thanks to the over 42,000 WWF supporters who spoke up for polar bears, arctic nations heard that polar bears are worth protecting. These messages of support for conservation were delivered at a high-level meeting on polar bears this month where impressive commitments for tackling threats to bears were made--including a commitment toward identifying important habitats and protected areas for polar bears. WWF welcomes these new promises and will continue our efforts to hold the arctic nations accountable and ensure progress is made.

Huge Victory! Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger Halt Angora Products ‏
We are pleased to announce that after discussions with PETA, Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger—and all other retailers owned by PVH Corp.—are banning and pulling from their shelves any products made with angora!
These companies join H&M, New Look, Esprit and ACNE that have stopped manufacturing angora products because of animal welfare concerns. The combined impact of people's voices are collecting and gaining huge momentum, let's keep it up!

More Good News for Rabbits: Gap Update
Gap--which also owns Old Navy, Banana Republic, and Athleta--has announced that it is suspending placement of orders using angora and investigating further. PETA welcomes this step, with the stipulation that it should lead to a ban so that rabbits and consumers can breathe easy again.
Please help make sure that Gap goes all the way by writing—and also encouraging everyone you know to write—to urge the company to BAN angora NOW!

Victory! NYC Airports Stop Killing Snowy Owls
An unusually large influx of snowy owls in the Northeast this winter has attracted them to airports, leading to safety concerns among aviation officials and the quick addition of snowy owls to the list of birds that airports can legally kill, complete with orders to shoot them on sight.
Media reports about snowy owls being added to the kill list, which was followed by the news of three being shot at JFK led to outcry from the public and organizations, including Friends of Animals (FoA), Goose Watch NYC, Audubon New York and New York City Audubon, among others. A Care2 petition urging the Port Authority to cease fire gathered more than 63,000 signatures.
Fortunately for the owls, public pressure seems to have paid off. Following media reports and objections to its plans, the Port Authority quickly backtracked and issued a statement saying that it will stop killing owls and adopt non-lethal alternatives.

Blind man who fell on New York subway tracks: 'guide dog saved my life
This heart-warming story is one to read in full, so I'll share the link below and tell you to go read this miraculous and heroic story of guide dog Orlando, a black Labrador retriever, who bravely leapt on to the tracks at a Manhattan subway platform on Tuesday after his blind owner lost consciousness and tumbled in front of an oncoming train.

Northern Ireland Gives Gay Couples an Early Christmas Present
Northern Ireland has lifted its ban on gay couples adopting, a massive step toward equality that could also help in Northern Ireland’s marriage equality fight.
The ban was officially lifted on December 11. It prevented same-sex and opposite sex unmarried couples from adopting. As same-sex couples cannot yet marry in Northern Ireland, this was a de facto ban on same-sex couples adopting even if they were in a legally recognized civil partnership.
In June, the Court of Appeal upheld a decision by the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission finding that the ban breaches European human rights laws.

HUGE Victory! PA Supreme Court Says State Can't Force Fracking on Local Communities
Pennsylvania Supreme Court made a 4-2 decision yesterday declaring the zoning provisions of Act 13 unconstitutional.
The court has ruled on the side of communities’ rights to stand up to big oil and gas companies who want to frack in their backyards against their will. A state law called Act 13 had stripped these rights—no doubt at the behest of industry itself. But seven communities in Pennsylvania took them to court to reclaim the right to use their traditional zoning powers to determine how fracking moves forward within their own borders. And now, against David and Goliath odds, Pennsylvania’s communities have won.

Win! New York City bans Styrofoam
New York's City Council voted unanimously to ban the use of polystyrene (Styrofoam) containers yesterday. New York is now the largest U.S. city to implement such a ban on single-use foam containers.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg is expected to sign the bill into law before leaving office at the end of the year.

Terminator Seeds Approval Delayed in Brazil
On behalf of the seed saving farmers that USC Canada works with around the world, I would like to express our sincere thanks to all those who raised their voices against Terminator seeds. Faced with an overwhelming international response, Brazil has once again delayed its move to approve the risky Terminator technology.
Wondering what Terminator Seeds are? Terminator seeds (known scientifically as Genetic Use Restriction Technologies, or GURTs) are seeds that are genetically engineered to produce plants that are sterile. These plants produce seed that is unusable for replanting after the first harvest, meaning farmers have to buy new seeds from a central supplier every year. The technology has always been controversial and a United Nations international ban was agreed upon in 2000. But as we've seen, Brazil seemed willing to break this moratorium. Thankfully, people from around the world spoke out!

❀ The Good News ❀

. . . . . . . . . .

Cruel Badger Cull Meets Embarrassing End
Two controversial badger culls have been labeled as failures and have finally been stopped after it became clear that those going after them wouldn’t be able to kill enough badgers to meet their targets. While this has led to relief among animal advocates, it also raises concerns that what was done will make things worse.
The pilot programs were run in Gloustershire and Somerset in an effort to stop the spread of Bovine Tuberculosis (bTB) among cattle, but killing badgers to solve the problem has caused controversy among scientists, farmers, the government and animal advocates.
The programs were designed to see whether or not shooting free-running badgers at night, as opposed to trapping them, would help stop the spread of bTB. Scientists and animal advocacy groups — including the Badger Trust, Humane Society International/UK, RSPCA, League Against Cruel Sports and the International Fund for Animal Welfare, among others — have all come out strongly opposing using badgers as scapegoats for a problem affecting cattle.

Animal Welfare Movement is Growing Fast in China
Chinese animal lovers are banding together to lobby their government for laws that protect animals. The growing number of animal advocates is chipping away at the country’s image as a hotbed of indifference to animal suffering.
The New York Times reports that revulsion at animal abuse is growing among the Chinese. Citizens have been taking matters into their own hands, rescuing cats and dogs headed to restaurants to be slaughtered and served to customers.
They are also pressing the government to take systemic action. No law protects animals from cruelty in China, except for endangered species and animal husbandry situations. Animal advocates have been working for years to change that. In 2009, with the help of sympathetic law professors, activists submitted proposed animal welfare legislation to the National People’s Congress.

Victory! EU’s Seal Product Ban Upheld by World Trade Organization
In a landmark victory for seals, the World Trade Organization ruled on Monday to uphold the European Union’s (EU) ban on imported seal products over ethical concerns.
In 2010, the EU enacted a ban on seal products, with exceptions for Inuit and other indigenous communities and for products that were derived for non-commercial purposes as a result of managing marine resources. The move was challenged by Canada and Norway, which both argued that the embargo violated global trade rules and that the hunts are humane and sustainable, despite evidence to the contrary.
The WTO pointed out inconsistencies and problems with trade agreements, but ruled in the end that the ban was valid because it fills “the objective of addressing EU public moral concerns on seal welfare to a certain extent, and no alternative measure was demonstrated to make an equivalent or greater contribution to the fulfillment of the objective.”
Conservationists and animal advocacy groups are celebrating the victory, not only because it’s a big one for seals, but because it’s a big one for global animal welfare issues in general. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), which has been campaigning against the hunt for decades, noted that the WTO’s recognition of our right to oppose products that we believe are cruel and unsustainable is cause for celebration.

Breaking News: Elephants out of India's Circuses‏
Earlier this year, PETA India and Animal Rahat released the results of a shocking nine-month undercover investigation of more than a dozen circuses that travelled across India. The investigation – authorised by the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) – documented heartbreaking cruelty to elephants.
Now – little more than two months after this groundbreaking investigation rocked India and made headlines around the world – the AWBI has confirmed in just-released notes that it has "decided to stop registration of elephants for performance … in view of huge cruelties and abuse suffered by them ," a move that will effectively mean an end to the captivity of elephants in India's circuses. The AWBI is also preparing to seize elderly and injured elephants named in PETA India's report so they may be rehabilitated. While the board hasn't yet done so formally, its notes also indicate support for an eventual ban on the use of all animals in circuses in India.

Success! No Amur Falcons Murdered This Year
Just about a year ago a Care2 writer wrote about 14,000 migrating Amur Falcons that were being murdered every day in the Indian state of Nagaland, a stopover in their migration from Siberia to Africa.
Now, as a result of action from Care2 and other groups, as well as three Indian villages, no birds have been massacred this year. Almost 9,000 Care2 activists signed our petition to save the Amur Falcons.
Thank you, Care2 activists!

Groundbreaking Lawsuit Says Chimps Are Literally People, Too
This week, efforts that have been years in the works have finally made their debut with the filing of the first of many lawsuits seeking to demolish the legal wall that separates humans from nonhuman animals.
Unbeknownst to Tommy, a 26-year-old chimpanzee, the Nonhuman Rights Project (NhRP) filed a lawsuit this week in New York state under the writ of habeus corpus seeking to have him released to a sanctuary that is part of the North American Primate Sanctuary Alliance (NAPSA).

Good News for African Elephants
Representatives from 30 countries came together to discuss the poaching crisis and potential measures to save Africa’s elephants at the African Elephant Summit.
The African Elephant Summit finally brought key nations together to focus on the entire trade chain and address problems from where elephants live to where ivory ends up.
They agreed on 14 Urgent Measures that will take a zero-tolerance approach to poaching and will hopefully protect elephants from further suffering. A few of the measures include working with local communities on conservation efforts and campaigning to end the demand for ivory to increasing on-the-ground efforts that will give local law enforcement and wildlife protection agencies the means to deal with powerfully armed poaching syndicates and strengthen cooperation between agencies. One measure also includes creating a network of forensic labs that will be able to determine where ivory came from and provide evidence that can be used in court.
Probably the most important measure is the agreement to classify wildlife trafficking as a “serious crime,” which will “effectively unlock international law enforcement cooperation provided under the United Nationals Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime, including mutual legal assistance, asset seizure and forfeiture, extradition, and other tools to hold criminals accountable for wildlife crime.”

Good News for Rabbits: Angora Update: H&M, New Look and Esprit Listened‏
Following the viral success of  PETA's video exposing how rabbits are treated on Chinese angora farms as well as actions by hundreds of thousands of concerned people, some of the UK's favourite brands have suspended angora production!
H&M, New Look, Esprit and ACNE are among the companies that have stopped manufacturing angora products because of animal welfare concerns. The combined impact of their decision is huge and will potentially spare hundreds of thousands of rabbits being imprisoned, manhandled and plucked alive. We're now hoping these companies will take the next step and banish angora from their stores permanently
People power made this possible, so thank you for being a part of this campaign.

Fur Free Friday 2013 a Huge Success
Fur Free Friday just celebrated its twenty-seventh year and it is still going strong! Coast to coast across the United States and in cities around the world, activists took time out of their holiday weekend to speak up for the fifty million animals slaughtered each year for their fur. We encouraged consumers to shop cruelty-free this holiday season by avoiding fur and fur-trimmed items.
IDA coordinated demos in forty cities for the Fur Free Friday event this year, which is almost double the number of cities that participated last year! Our movement is definitely growing! And thanks to caring people like you, thousands of people now know the truth behind the egregiously cruel fur industry.

Waitress Turns Anti-LGBT Discrimination into Something Awesome
This story is a heart-warming one of human kindness, in reaction to human ignorance. Dayna Morales, an ex-Marine and now server at the Gallop Asian Bistro in Bridgewater, New Jersey, went to pick up the $93.55 bill from a family she had been serving that night, she was affronted to find a note scribbled on the receipt saying she would be getting no tip. The note read: “I’m sorry but I cannot tip because I do not agree with your lifestyle and how you live your life.”
Morales sent a picture of the receipt complete with the note scribbled on it to the “Have a Gay Day” Facebook page. The Internet, in that way it sometimes does, then took over.
The post quickly garnered thousands of shares and hundreds of comments. Gradually, an idea formed: to donate $1 to Dayna to make up for the money she lost out on. Dayna has now received more than $2000, but she’s not keeping all of it. Instead, she has pledged to donate a portion to the Wounded Warriors Project which helps to rehabilitate and empower wounded veterans.

12-Year-Old Girl Fights for Her Right to Wrestle on the Boys Team
Twelve-year-old Audrianna Beattie has been a wrestler since the third grade. But when she moved from Iowa to rural Pennsylvania she found that she couldn’t compete against the boys.
I don’t mean that in a “she’s not good enough” kind of way. Last year she competed against boys, and her record was 5-3. No, what I mean is that at her new school she isn’t allowed to compete with boys. It’s against the rules.
She’s not taking this lying down. She’s literally making a federal case of it. Last week she testified for 40 minutes in front of a federal judge for her right to compete with the boys. Audrianna’s parents believe that their daughter’s ineligibility violates the federal equal protection clause and the state constitution’s equal rights amendment.

4 Countries That Got Rid of McDonald’s
While McDonald’s currently has restaurants in 118 countries, here are four countries that managed to get the company to close shop: Iceland, Bolivia, Macedonia, Bermuda.
Hopefully this will spread!

Flame retardant debate burns out for good in California
Last week the State of California officially passed a long-awaited fire safety standard that means furniture products sold in the state will no longer need to be treated with toxic flame retardants.

World’s Largest Landfill Will Soon Power Parts of New York City
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced that Freshkills Park on Staten Island, once the world’s largest landfill, will soon be converted into the city’s largest solar energy facility. Once completed, the plant will produce up to 10 megawatts of power — five times more than any solar energy system in the city and enough to power approximately 2,000 homes.

Ending the Use of Triclosan
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), under a court agreement signed recently, will end decades of delay and decide how to protect consumers from triclosan, a suspected endocrine disruptor linked to reproductive and developmental harm in laboratory studies.
The FDA first proposed in 1978 to remove triclosan from certain consumer products. But because it took no further action, the chemical has been widely used in antimicrobial soaps sold in the U.S.
In 2010, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) sued the FDA in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York to force the agency to issue a final rule. The parties reached a settlement and, under a consent decree signed by U.S. District Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein, the agency committed to taking final action on triclosan used in consumer hand soaps by 2016.

6 Awesome Celebrities Share Their Thoughts on Being a Feminist
It’s crazy that even to this day the word feminist in many circles, even among women, is considered negative and dirty. Why does believing in equality conjure up such negative reactions?
Probably because the word is incredibly misunderstood. That’s why it’s so important to proudly share your feminist identity with anyone who will listen.
Check out these 6 kickass female celebrities who proudly claim that yes they are feminists, too:

NBC Sports has responded to Care2's Petition, PETA, and other compassionate individuals like yourself, and has canceled the NRA-sponsored big game hunting show Under Wild Skies.
The show depicted NRA lobbyist Tony Makris as he hunted elephants, hippopotamuses, antelope, buffalo, crocodiles, and numerous other exotic animals—including one episode in particular that featured Makris laughing as he shot an African bull elephant in the face.
A very big thank you to all of you who responded to the action alerts and urged NBC to cancel Under Wild Skies!

Shockingly Neglected Dog Carly is Now Living the Dream
Several months after she wandered into a woman’s Los Angeles area backyard showing all the signs of years of abuse, a dog named Carly is leading a good and happy life in her forever home.
Carly is one resilient pup. On May 21, Annie Hart, the founder of the Los Angeles-based Bill Foundation, received a call from the woman into whose yard Carly had chanced to stop in. Her hair was terribly matted and soiled and her eyes and face bore the signs of burns and infection.
As wrenching as it is to know that too many animals are mistreated as Carly was, it is something  to see how, with attention and love, she has been able to recover and that she has a family whose members know how lucky they are that Carly is with them.

Now Even Rural LGBTs in India Can Get Help without Coming Out
A new helpline has been set up in India to help provide counseling and advice services for the LGBT community.
The new and first of its kind for the region initiative, called the Saahay Project, gives LGBTs in the Indian states of Chhattisgarh, Delhi and Maharashtr a toll-free number (1800-2000-113) to call to discuss a variety of issues including sexual health and fears surrounding forced marriage.
The project is backed by an international NGO, FHI360, as part of an operational research study that is designed to assess outreach effectiveness among men who have sex with men (MSM) and also trans women who may engage in sex work. There will be particular focus on promoting HIV/AIDS awareness and educating about safe practice.
The new helpline, it is hoped, will give LGBTs in these areas access to the support and guidance they need.

Calf Left on Road Gets Rescued by Pair Feeding Stray Dogs
This is a heart-warming story from Joellen Anderson of Integrated Animal Care Center in India; he and his good friend are animal advocates living in Delhi, India. They spend every evening feeding the stray dogs in their neighborhood. One night at around 10:30, as they were making their rounds, they were searching for a particular dog and instead encountered a baby calf. The calf was abandoned and injured so they took it to the nearby shelter Sanjay Ghandi.
Big actions and small actions, all going a long way!

Success! Iran Releases Canadian Prisoner Hamid Ghassemi-Shall
After five years of unfair imprisonment, Iran has released Canadian citizen Hamid Ghassemi-Shall. He was freed on September 23rd as part of an amnesty for 80 political prisoners in Iran.
Thanks to a number of human rights efforts, and to the 12,000 Care2 members who signed the petition, Ghassemi-Shall can soon return to Canada and resume his life that was abruptly interrupted five years.
In May 2008, Ghassemi-Shall traveled to his native Iran to visit his mother. Ghassemi-Shall immigrated to Canada in 1979 following a revolution in his home country, and had made a number of trips to Iran without issue in the past. However, during this visit, officials confiscated Ghassemi-Shall’s personal belongings, including his Canadian passport, under the suspicion that he and his brother Alborz, an Iranian national, were plotting to send an incriminating email to one another against Iran. No such email existed.
Ghassemi-Shall’s release is an incredible success for human rights around the world, and this would not have been possible with the tremendous support of people like you!

5 Creative Ways People Are Fighting the Keystone XL Pipeline
1. Building a Solar-Powered Barn: In a move that’s both literally and symbolically brilliant, volunteers from BoldNebraska.org are building a barn, which will act as a solar and wind-powered community center, on land directly in the path of the Keystone XL pipeline. Supporters say that if all else fails to stop the pipeline, they’ll protect the barn with their own bodies.
2. Human Oil Spill: Tar sand oil spills, like the one that devastated Mayflower, Ark., earlier this year, have caused many Americans to change their minds about building the Keystone XL. Such spills are not a low-percentage possibility, but thanks to TransCanada’s documented disregard for safe-welding practices, they are a certainty. Some creative protesters in Denver decided to pre-enact such a spill for their elected officials. Dressed all in black, they “spilled” themselves on the lawn of the Denver Civic Center.
3. Funeral for Our Future Many scientists and climate experts have gone on record to say that building the Keystone XL pipeline would be like signing Mother Nature’s death sentence, taking the human race along with her. So, earlier this year, over 100 youth and their allies showed up at TransCanada’s MA office to mourn their lost future (watch the video). http://youtu.be/RwmKJKtNE0c
4. Fore! Oil company executives make lots of money, and if there’s one thing rich people like to do, it’s play golf. Upon learning that the the Valero corporation would be sponsoring a golf tournament in his home town, one Keystone XL protester decided to get creative.
5. A Line in the (Tar) Sand: Just days ago, thousands of people in hundreds of places across the U.S. joined together in a nationwide action called “Draw the Line.” Organized by 350.0rg, the protests encouraged local pipeline opponents to literally form a line against sections of the pipeline–sending a clear message that America has no interest in allowing the world’s dirtiest form of fuel to flow through its heartland.

This Critically Endangered Species is Getting a Second Chance
Distinctive looking creatures for sure, the saiga antelope may yet recover from the brink of extinction and prove to be a conservation success story.
Saiga, who live in the steppe grasslands and semi-arid deserts throughout Russia and Central Asia, are believed to have outlived ancient animals including the woolly mammoth and sabertooth tiger with populations that once numbered in the millions as recently as the last century. Unfortunately, poaching and other threats have continued to cause losses that have driven their numbers down by 95 percent in just the last 15 years.
In 2002, saiga were listed as critically endangered on the Red List of Threatened Species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which is the last stop before a species is listed as extinct in the wild. However, it appears these goat-sized animals are making a comeback in Kazakhstan thanks to efforts to protect them, according to National Geographic.
