♥ Grace Neutral: Art and Apparel ♥

Grace Neutral is perhaps best known for her tattooed lilac eyeballs, her stretched nose, pixie ears, removed belly button, her beautiful manga and disney tattoos, and her scarification, but what her lovely individualistic persona leads to is so much more. To say the least, Grace Neutral is such a fascinating, captivating, and talented individual. She struck my attention first on Instagram with her unique and traditional method of hand poke tattooing; from there, her art drew me in, her presence became mesmerizing, and her talents endless. I always admire an artist with so much to offer beyond just their artistic abilities, but getting to see a piece of their lives, of their personalities and characteristic quirks always leads me to follow someone's work even further. Again, I will say this lovely talented woman from the UK is nothing short of astounding. With so much to offer the social media-crazed world we currently live in, it's no wonder she is gaining popularity so quickly--and certainly so very well-deserved. 

Grace, to me, is captivating in appearance but also in her personality; and this is a personality that certainly shows through her work. She is non-traditional in the best ways, completely unique, and not afraid of changing her body to her own liking, unafraid of judgement, and crossing boundaries of expected representations of women. All of these are so admirable in a society that continues to oppress people, and women in specific. Grace is a refreshing breath of fresh air and a positive addition to the social media world. 

After getting to talk a little bit with her, I have to add that she is an absolute sweetheart and I hope to one day meet her in person. 

Hand Poke Tattoos. 

If you are fortunate enough to live nearby--or like me, hope to one day make a trip to the UK-- then Grace Neutral will offer you a unique tattoo experience with amazing artistic talent to back up her traditional method. You can find her at Good Times Tattoo in London, tattooing a variety of fantastic mandalas and cartoon characters that are just too fun. I also love her geekery in general; the tattoos she does surrounding pop culture, disney, cute things, and, of course, Ghibli characters are just too adorable and fantastic for words. Whatever you're looking for, she no doubt will tattoo something unforgettable for your tattoo journey.  

Apparel and Art.

If you aren't fortunate enough to live in the UK then you can still take home with you a piece of Grace Neutral's astounding talents. She runs an etsy shop featuring several brilliant mandala designs on t-shirts and other apparel, some wicked tie-dye stockings and undies, keychains, tote bags, prints, and more. Some of these are limited prints so I definitely recommend getting your hands on anything that catches your eye so you don't miss out. I immediately fell in love with the Totoro and Ghibli mandalas--what a fun and gorgeous idea for shirts! 

Grace Neutral was awesome enough to send me a Totoro mandala tee, as well as a fun "optical illusion" mandala tee. Both are ridiculously fun! They are printed well and with quality; they are also surprisingly comfy for being printed on Gildan t-shirts (I would love to see her designs offered on american apparel or other softer tees though). Both of these shirts are now two of my favourite in my collection. Totoro will always be a favourite amongst Ghibli fans, but I feel that a design this unique only comes around so often--so don't miss out!

♥ Iconic Locks - Dreadlock Extensions ♥

Custom premade and made to order synthetic dreadlock extensions and accessories. 

Extensions are fun for a girl who doesn't want to dye or damage her own hair, dreadlock extensions are extra fun for a girl that loves to change up hairstyles but doesn't want to cut her own hair. Yes, I'm explaining my personal love for extensions. It has been a long time since I've dyed or done anything spectacular directly to my own head (as any of my regular readers will know), so I rely on extensions to add the splash of colour and the playfulness back to my hair. 

In my years of fashion fun, I have used plenty of dreadlock extensions to add that whimsical and earthy, fun and "hippie" look I often love. I have had everything from just a few colourful dreadlocks to a full head of extensions of varying colours and varying brands. Amongst those, Iconic Locks has been my favourite to date. My search for my latest desire (a set of turquoise and blue) led me to searching through etsy once more. When I found Iconic Locks, I instantly fell in love. 

First I will say, oh the colours! I love a shop that has variety and diversity and catches my eye and presents their products well. The colour selection is nothing short of outstanding. I also love the customer gallery on their Facebook page that displays the fun different extensions; it helps to get a comparison with different skin tones and colour combinations, not to mention inspiration to make your final decision in your own dreadlock selection. 

Next, I will say the quality--which is certainly more important than just colour options--is absolutely perfect. The size and texture of the dreadlocks are perfect, thick but lightweight, with great movement, and are incredibly realistic. This is a huge requirement for me in good dreadlock extensions; you don't want your dreadlocks to look fake or badly made, otherwise it looks simply awful and you've wasted your money. It is absolutely worth paying the money for good extensions, through and through. Dreadlocks are more than just an accessory (unless you are wearing a dread fall), they are braided into your hair or added to the end of real dreadlocks, so you want them to look fabulous and realistic, not tacky and cheap. Do it right, that is certainly some good advice when choosing dreadlock extensions, especially when there is such a large variety to choose from on the internet. Another obvious reason I love and recommend Iconic Locks is that I love love supporting small business owners and creative individuals. The heart and work that goes into making such beautiful wearable art should be appreciated, and certainly adds to the overall satisfaction and enjoyment of wearing such awesome products. Someone poured their heart and soul into that work! How amazing is that? 

You can order your Iconic Locks in a variety of lengths and colours, and Katherine, who runs the shop and makes the lovely items, is incredibly helpful. She helped me ever so patiently pick out exactly what I desired and was very friendly about it.   

This also may seem silly, but I love that Iconic Locks is based out of Portland--the city is such an artistic and inspiring place that I love to visit, and therefore I feel like the beautiful skill and creativity of the dreadlocks at Iconic Locks is a perfect depiction of this artistic scene. 

Overall satisfaction with my set of dreadlocks from Iconic Locks is absolute perfection. It's nice having a great quality shop to turn to. So check out the shop, get yourself a pair for any number of fun reasons (including festival season upon us!).

Making the world a better place... one step at a time

It is my great pleasure and excitement to share this awesome company today, but before I dive too much into my personal excitement, I'd like to share a bit about soleRebels first… 

soleRebels is an amazing footwear company founded in 2004 by company founder and managing director Bethlehem Tilahun Alemu in her community of Zenabwork, Ethiopia. What is truly unique and wonderful about this company--and has completely won me over--are the ethics, incentive, community support and the rich history and dedication soleRebels have created and continue to promote about both their community in Ethiopia and to reach around the globe. This amazingly fun and comfortable footwear company creates great employment opportunities right inside their own community: giving the often ignored a chance to engage in creative endeavors--which is a rare find these days and one we should all be supporting more. The company itself promotes development in a positive way, empowering themselves, their community, and controlling their own destinies. 

From the very start, soleRebels proudly employed and trained the highly marginalized or those thought unemployable; and together they set out to re-imagine the traditional Ethiopian “selate” and “barabasso” shoes in dynamic and vibrant new fashions. The goal was to create something that was authentically local but had a truly universal flavour to it, and from there soleRebels have accomplished this and so much more. 

As if fair wage and community support aren't enough to wow you, soleRebels has also maintains their focus on sustainability: crafting their footwear from a combination of recycled, organic and bio-based materials. What else is fantastic? All their shoes are made in the most energy efficient way: handmade! Yup, that's right, no factories here, just amazing employees making shoes with love.

WHY SHOES?

soleRebels: We selected shoes because we saw that footwear was an excellent platform to begin to share many of the indigenous eco-sensible craft heritages and artisan talents that we have here in Ethiopia with the world! It also meant that based on the approach we were taking to footwear creation, we could source and make almost all our materials locally thereby creating an export product from 100% local inputs.

And this allowed us to riff, recreate and re-imagine the traditional “selate” and “barabasso” shoes, a recycled car tire soled shoe that has existed in Ethiopia for a LONG time. In fact it was THE footwear from back in the day when the ORIGINAL “soleRebels” fought off the invading forces and kept Ethiopia as the only African nation to never be colonized!

Now, I can't finish without talking about their amazing fair-trade and eco-friendly products… 

First, just WOW! I own a pair of the coZEEs boots in purple (pictured above) and I have never worn shoes more comfortable than these! Never ever in my entire life. They hug your feet and it feels like you are wearing nothing--not in the ouch pebbles way, but in the blissful walking in soft grass way, providing a light and dreamy shoe while maintaining a sturdy lasting feel. And these shoes are awesome, we can't forget about awesome. I just love all the vibrant colours and the different style options soleRebels has to offer. While the coZEEs are my favourite, they have so much more to offer. Not all of their footwear is vegan, but they have an entire "b*KND Vegan" section that includes cute flats, sneakers, slip-ons, sandals, and even bags and the "coZEES Pure Love" are all vegan as well. So yay!

For obvious reasons, I love supporting all the many amazing Vegan companies out there. I especially love supporting products that have the eco-conscious mentality. So, who couldn't fall in love with Compassion Company? 

Compassion Company is Vegan owned and operated, and provides some awesome shirts (and other products) where vegans can parade their awesome beliefs and lifestyles to the world. This company states that they believe the best to affect social change is to lead by setting a positive example. I couldn't agree more! All of their designs are hand drawn art that you won't find anywhere else. All of their shirts are also made from super soft recycled or organic cotton and are printed with water based and discharge inks to minimize their environmental impact, while also providing some ultra comfy shirts. The shirts are also sweatshop free, assembled by workers in South Carolina that are treated with respect and provided with benefits such as health, dental, paid vacations and more. Because what's the point of only focussing on animal welfare if you neglect human welfare as well? 

On top of all that ethical awesomeness, 5% of every sale is also donated to an organization, that changes every three months, that promotes animal rights and a cruelty free lifestyle.  

I have one of Compasson Company's "Anything you can eat, I can eat vegan" shirts and I just love it. The fabrics are super soft and get softer with every wash, as well as the printed image. The fit of their apparel is also comfy and flattering, the fabrics are super lovely soft, and are just how I love my t-shirts (which is strangely hard to find these days with so many boxy unflattering tees floating around). The messages that this company displays are simply awesome and empowering, spreading veganism in a positive and fun way. As well as shirts, you can also find pins and stickers with their awesome slogans and designs to spread your vegan superpowers!   

The staff are also super friendly, helpful, and wonderful to talk to. Overall, this company simply Rocks--all the way around!

What's funner than starting the new year with health in mind? Not much, I say! No doubt being healthy is on many of our New Year's Resolutions, and that means… no delicious desserts? Well! They came about from some innovative minds that were tired of seeing the amount of waster generated from disposable paper cups in our throw-away culture and strove to find another alternative. Reusable cups are great, a step in the right direction, but the EcoJarz team had other ideas to take things a step further, and that was to reuse old jars and turn those into a to-go cup instead of buying something new entirely.  

The Stainless Steel EcoJarz Drink Top was their first invention and are designed  to make reuse the new norm. These drink tops fit standard canning jars, so they also fit hundreds of other bottles and containers that are disposed of everyday; fitting any standard mouth jar, whether it’s an empty tomato sauce, salsa, or peanut butter jar, or so many more. ♥ Barre: a Real Food Bar made with Wholesome Ingredients (Review) ♥

Protein bars are everywhere these days, in all sorts of crazy flavours and, well, a ton of questionable ingredients. There are only a handful of companies out there that actually put in the effort of creating something truly wholesome that can be enjoyed everyone and anyone. 

Barre is one of those lovely little companies, run by Julia and Aaron, who set out to create such an amazing bar.  

"When I set out to create Barre I did so to address my exacting needs as a dancer: it had to fuel me without weighing me down, it had to be sustaining yet easy to digest with the proper mix of nutrients, it had to contain only the finest all-natural whole foods, and, of course, it had to taste sublime. Basically, it had to be just right."

The problem with most energy bars is that they are packed full of ingredients that may give you a boost but will end up making you crash. Some ingredients you can't even pronounce, which is always waves a red flag. But even "natural" food bars often contain bad-for-you sugars (which is the hardest one to avoid in any bar, yet one of the worst things for your body: both mentally and physically), milk proteins, gluten, and any number of allergens that will leave you drained and feeling sluggish as opposed to actually energized. It's a real shame. But that's why I was excited when I discovered Barre!  

Barre was created by Julia and Aaron, both professional ballet dancers, who were tired of trying to find an energy bar that actually fit their physical and nutritional needs that would help them perform. Because dancers require an immense focus on their nutrition, it only makes sense that such a heavenly food product would be created by a ballet duo. Barre originally began when Julia was making bars to fit her own needs, and grew as friends and coworkers tried her creation and wanted more. Julia partnered up with Aaron and together they began making large batches of Barre in their kitchen and sold them to the students attending the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School summer course in mid-2010.  With the success of this venture they decided, why not go bigger? 

I know I'm glad they did!

So, there's quite the science and balance and nutritional perfection that had gone into the making of Barre, but what about flavour? Let me just say they are heavenly bars that will most definitely delight. They taste good for you, in a good way! You can feel and taste the goodness of the ingredients, simple and delightful, and, as boasted, they really do provide a superb source of energy that won't leave you tired within the hour. I love eating these bars before yoga or working out, leaving my hunger perfectly satisfied while still feeling super light and ready to bend and stretch and twist. Truly a joy! 

I think Barre said it best about their products and what separates them from other foods bars: Barre is not an energy bar—it is a real food bar. We designed it to contain the perfect balance of nutrients so that you can perform your best. And we did so holding true to a few important mandates: great taste, wholesome clean nutrition and convenience.

Black Swan Chocolate Berry is a lovely nutty blend with cocoa and cranberries that is rich and flavourful.   

Ballerina Spirulina. Who doesn't want a bar that is packed full of nutritional goodness and tastes amazing?! I love the spirulina in this bar, adding a green so-good-for-you boost with a blend of coconut flakes in this macaroon-like bar. 

But don't take my word for it, go and try them for yourself! You can find them online or at many retail locations (find them on their store locator), or if you can't find them locally, they are absolutely worth the effort of trying to get your local food coop or fitness centre to carry them!

♥ Chocholistic: Raw Healthy Chocolate! ♥

My new favourite goodies are the kind that make you feel completely guilt-free, and even good about eating them! This is where raw chocolate comes in to save the day, and, in particular, today I am sharing with you: Chocholistic!

♥ Rose Pedals Jewelry (Review) ♥

Remember when everyone was wearing feather earrings? Oh wait, people are still doing that… well, I have something far more awesome to share with you than cruel feather earrings! I introduce to you; Rose Pedals Jewelry! 

Okay, so first off, Rose Pedals Jewelry makes the prettiest, spunkiest, just plain awesomest, faux-feather earrings I've ever seen. They're made from cleaned and recycled bicycle parts, innertubes, brake washers, chain links and rivets, all cleaned and polished and given a new life as wearable art! Plus saving unnecessary goods from ending up in the trash. So, we've just combined eco-friendly with cruelty-free (so, yay, vegans can enjoy!), which are all A's in my books! Oh yeah, and the earrings are gorgeous, did I mention that already? 

You won't just find faux-feather earrings at Rose Pedal Jewelry either, there is a whole line of necklaces, bracelets, and other pretty styles of earrings. Something for everyone! 

I just love how elegant and sleek all the jewelry looks, and the styles are all very creative and unique. When I received my pair of earrings (I chose the mismatched feather earrings) I was ecstatic. I don't think I ever want to take them off! The jewelry hangs perfectly and are super soft to the touch. Everything about these pieces are simply magical. I feel like a warrior princess wearing these! 

Not to mention, the feather-styled pieces are cut so breathtakingly perfect, with all the little slits to give them a beautiful and realistic resemblance to real feathers. I seriously can't even put into words the attention to detail and care that looks to be poured into these pieces. I am extremely impressed! 

Everything about this shop is just so perfectly wonderful!  What's also fun is that you can easily dress it up or play it down to make these pieces work with whatever look you're in the mood for. And who doesn't change their mood and style from day to day? I know I sure do! 

Megan Rose is the lovely owner of the shop and she has just been so wonderful to communicate with and is such a great seller in every aspect. She runs her shop to great customer satisfaction, which makes the online buying experience all the more enjoyable. Megan hand-makes all the necklaces and earrings in the shop from her home workshop on Denman Island, British Columbia, Canada. All the recycled bike parts come from either her home bike shop or the recycling bin at the community bike co-op where she volunteers.

Her line is inspired by the cycle culture and street level fashions of the city itself, and continues to grow in its new location on the west coast of British Columbia. Megan Rose lives happily on Denman Island with her husband Eli, a cat and an organic garden.
