{life reflections}

. . . . . . . . . .
{life reflections}
Weekly thoughts and rambles. A glimpse into my mind and world.
These are entries that I might jot down in my Happy Diary; what happens when we put our fingers to the keyboard and allow our thoughts to flow uninhibited. Reflections from the soul.
Reflections of life.

I hope to leave you inspired.
If you want to share your own reflections of the week please leave a link to your "life reflections" entry in the comments for all to find and see.
. . . . . . . . . .

Happy-get-on-track week is going well, I am happy to say! (harhar) I know last week's post may have been a bit of a downer, but as I always say, life is just like that sometimes. Regardless, I am feeling myself again. Sometimes getting back on track truly is only as hard as we make it.
I've written up a post before on all the things I did originally to get back on track so I'm not going to repeat it all now. However, remembering that Happiness is in my own hands was one of the most helpful things for me this week. When you're in a slump it's easy to stay there because we often wake up feeling not so upidy-awesome and because we don't fix that right when we wake up, the spiral happens. I want to write a full "list" this week of more useful tips, since these "life reflections" posts aren't generally supposed to take over my "Inspirational" posts with all the life advice and help. So, let's just say that I'm back on track, that I forced myself to smile every single day. I'd wake up in the morning, telling myself "I love my life" with a great big silly grin, and start saying in my head all the things that I am grateful for as I entered my morning. I swear to you, this alone helps tremendously. Tremendously!!!
That aside, I am so very grateful for the amazing friends and family I have in my life. I feel so blessed and loved and grateful. And I can't tell you how much I appreciated how many of you wrote me as well wishing me better and if that I needed anything you were there for me. So truly truly touched and grateful to you amazing wonderful lovely friends! I love you! And I think it goes without saying that I am always here for you too if ever you need me. xoxo
On Saturday I got to celebrate my good friend's birthday and housewarming, it was an epic night filled with so much ridiculousness and laughs and memories. I haven't actually drank since New Year's Eve, so it was fun getting even sillier and louder than I usually am. ;) We also tried to watch the meteor shower on Monday with a few friends while we had a bonfire, but the moon was so bright we didn't see any (and I'm sure staring at the fire instead of the sky didn't help either).
So blessed for my friends. I honestly don't have many in real life. I just don't really see the point in having a bazillion friends that you're not even close with just for a popularity contest. This isn't high school anymore. That's what I see a lot in this small town anyway, and I'm sure it's the same elsewhere. I don't get it. Why not put the time and effort instead towards working on the close relationships you do have instead of spreading yourself too thin? I just see so many of the artificial friendships of these big groups of insecure people that cling together and feed their own insecurities by talking badly about one another behind each other's backs. How is that helpful? How is that real friendship? True friends are there for each other, support one another, lift each other up when they're down. They don't Kick them down!
So, anyways, I don't have that many friends in real life. I want Real friendships with people I actually have things in common with and have fun with and who support and love me as I do them. I know lots of fun people that I'll hang out at parties with but that's as far as many of them go. I love my close friends. So incredibly much. I love getting the hugs and seeing their smiles, and laughing and adventuring, and going for tea. In case this isn't obvious either, I don't go out partying much. It's not that I don't enjoy it, but I do understand the effect of not only the alcohol, but even going sober with all the staying up late totally messing up sleep patterns and therefor your head and health. Going out tooooo often also exhausts yourself, and where's the fun in that? Maybe it's also because, while it's fun to flail around and be ridiculously silly, I appreciate more of the sober times where you get quality time with the people you enjoy being around and sometimes drinking just feels like the artificial side of things. Again, not that I don't enjoy a good fun flailing night. Hopefully you understand what I mean. Don't get me wrong, I Do go out, and I Do have a ton of fun, I guess I've just sort of learned a bit of balance with that aspect of my life. I never used to party in high school, because I was a loner, I just didn't have much in common with a lot of people there and I really didn't know myself at all so not really a surprise. For the younger readers still in high school, I just want to let you know that life after high school gets better. Immensely better. I hated high school. I love life now. It's liberating and frightening, because when you leave school all of a sudden you're free to form your own opinions and hobbies and interests, where as in school it's very bootcamp and narrow minded--in my humble opinion. So yes, things get better.
And, yes, I am alllll over the place today. I swear I'm not drinking right now. ;)

How shall I finish this diary entry?…
Life is good! Life is grand! Life is Beautiful! Have you noticed everything blossoming?!!! So super exciting. The air smells so sweet with flowers and fresh rain and grass, and everything is so green and vibrant and coming alive. I love spring! It truly truly is such a cleansing season, taking out the old and making room for the new, which is why we have the extreme ups and downs at the moment, so just know that you are heading towards somewhere better. So stay positive. Always stay positive.

☼ Grow your own damn Food! ☼

. . . . . . . . . .
These weekly posts are to share the progress of our garden; sharing photos and our gardening experiments and will hopefully inspire you to grow your own garden too! :)
. . . . . . . . . .

It's been a rainy week most of this week, but fortunately last Tuesday was beautiful and we got a bunch of gardening done!
Okay, so I'll start with, well, the starts. ;) The peppers have finally all come up and growing quickly! Our so very nice landlords lent us a heat pad to place underneath them since peppers like warmth--like a lot. The romaine lettuce seedlings have started to pop up as well that we planted last week. And everything else is still growing and getting bigger and healthier.

Last week's post I mentioned that we were going to make the last garden bed. So we finished up all the beds! It was a day spent shovelling horse poop basically. Yum! For the last bed, we turned over the grassy soil and then did a thick layer of straw and then a pile of horse manure. Because the manure still kind of Looked like poop, we hosed it down with water and used a hoe and rake to break it down.

[newest garden bed/ last one to be built]

The back garden beds used to have flowers and plants in them. Cory already raked out all the stones and turned over some of the soil. We finished off the beds with a nice layer of manure and did the same thing; soaking it with water and breaking it down. This completes all our garden bed making! It's nice to be done, one more thing down and done. The rain all week has been nice for the manure as well, to really break it down and soak it in. See, rain is good sometimes too. Balance, right?

[Back Garden Beds. Poop!]

[Soggy Poop!]

[Lyla and Buster watching us rake manure from the windows]

[soaked the other three front garden beds too]

The radishes outside have gotten so big! And there is also soooo many of them! A thousand radishes!!! (I kept teasing Cory because he planted sooo many haha). We thinned those out since there were so many. The mustard greens are also getting nice and big and healthy outside too. That's still all really for anything planted outside yet. Since we've had so much rain and a bit of a cold snap, we decided to wait a bit.

[thinning the radishes]

 [happy mustard greens]

[frost cover for the radishes and mustard greens in the greenhouse]

So, the garden beds are all done. The seedlings are doing well. Can't complain. Today is another day off for Cory and the sun is flickering between the clouds so we'll be out doing more. I'll share more next week. ;)

[happy seedlings]

Hope you're all having a beautiful day and that your gardening and planting is going splendidly. :)

☼ Grow your own damn Food! ☼

. . . . . . . . . .
These weekly posts are to share the progress of our garden; sharing photos and our gardening experiments and will hopefully inspire you to grow your own garden too! :)
. . . . . . . . . .

We started our starts (heehee) inside this week in our little indoor greenhouse. Since we have the huge sunroom at our new place it means they also get a ton of natural light--much better than our place last year! We started our tomatoes, peppers, and some collards. Instead of planting them in those wasteful breakable little plastic containers people usually use, we got our hands on these awesome biodegradable ones (again from my dad's DIG garden centre), so when we transplant them to the garden we don't disturb the roots either. Neat, huh?

Cory also planted some radishes directly outside in the first garden bed this week, and a few greens since we've had a pretty warm March this year, and since we have a greenhouse outside to get an early start. That's what else we did today actually; build the outdoor greenhouse. We have a layer of frost cover as well. For the greenhouse, we found some PVC piping and Cory got the plastic cover from his Uncle, so everything is recycled too! :) It should do the trick, there's so much sun exposure and the weather is warming up quickly.

We did get the one surprise snow dump this week though too. I was actually snowed in, and then slushed in, since it snowed as much as it did and then melted right away! Crazy week. And now it's beautiful and warm and sunny again today… and they say Global Warming doesn't exist. ;p It was definitely a "wtf winter?!" moment. I mean… I loooove winter…

Anyways… greenhouse up! We still have the second one to do and we still have to make the last bed and fix up the front ones. Always exciting! I can't wait to have fresh food to pick again! Gardening is so rewarding!

☼ Grow your own damn Food! ☼

. . . . . . . . . .

This is a new edition I'd like to start on the blog. Gardening! I'm really quite new to it but we believe so strongly in being self-sustainable, getting back to nature, growing your own food, and eating healthily so I decided it was about time I started these posts. I'll be sharing photos and our gardening experiments and will hopefully inspire you to grow your own garden too! :)
. . . . . . . . . .

We started planning and getting our beds together this week, it's been a fun and busy week! Cory is awesome and went out and got the plywood and built the beds last week so we were all set to get the rest going this week. We went out to my dad's garden centre (Dig, at the junction between Nelson and Castlegar), as I mentioned a couple days ago, and got our manure and sea soil. We're starting from scratch this year which is quite the venture. It's more work initially but it's also nice getting to start from scratch because you can make sure your soil is super rich, not sandy, and free of weeds--which will mean hopefully less maintenance one the food starts growing because we won't need to weed as much.
Cory took a permaculture course a couple years ago and so he learned a lot, although there is sooo much to know and learn and experiment through experience when it comes to gardening, it really is quite the little adventure. He's teaching me anyway, because I know practically nothing. It's exciting. From our last two years gardening, I can say there is nothing more rewarding then getting to see your little seeds grow into food and eating veggies fresh out of the earth. Truly amazing. Nature is amazing and absolutely under appreciated in our high-technology society. It's nice to get back to the earth, back to what we should be doing.
I'm going to take a moment just to say that everyone should do what they can to grow their own food. Even if you don't have a garden where you are you can get creative. For instance, at our last place we weren't allowed to have a garden, but we found garden space from Cory's boss who had space they weren't using which we were able to take over. There are also community gardens you can contribute to and benefit from. You can even have little windowsill gardens and grow some greens. And if nothing else you could be sprouting and getting fresh greens every week that way. Do what you can. People are amazing and there are always options out there when you seek them out. So seek them out.

Anyways, back to your 2013 Garden!
We have garden space at the front of our house where there is a ton of sun exposure and soil already there for us, but it's small for all our needs which is why were built three more garden beds in the back. There used to be a hot tub in that space so it was already free of grass but there was sand that we first needed to dig out, so we did that. We also dug up the grass because you don't want grass beneath your garden beds or you'll get a ton of weeds. Because there wasn't much for weeds in the grass in this area we were able to turn the topsoil upside down and reuse it for a layer of our garden bed which I'll get to in a minute. For our largest bed we are experimenting with hugel-culture, a method of layering layers to maximize the soils' richness and water retention. Of course, like I said, I'm just learning, and Cory sort of knows what he's doing so this bed was a combination of cultures and is a bit of an experiment.
So, the layers…
Cardboard, rotten logs, upside-down topsoil, compost (with lots of wormies), straw, manure, sea soil, straw (to make everything else break down faster and to use as a mulch).

The logs were hilarious to get. We walked down the highway to the woods and found all these fallen logs. We used Cory's bike hitch trailer thing and carried them along the highway the few feet back home. We felt like real hippies and couldn't help but laugh. Good times. ;) It was also fun playing in the straw. See, gardening is fun! ;)

Cory finished off the second bed yesterday, while I finally did some work work… and took Lyla out of a walk to watch because it was such a beautiful sunny day. The second bed was a simple hugel-culture of cardboard, straw, compost, manure, and soil without the logs. We still need to finish the last bed and add some manure and sea soil to the front beds to make them richer, and the straw for mulching.
We haven't started seeds yet but will be starting our indoor seeds this week to keep inside until they are ready to be transplanted. It's almost time to plant some greens as well. Although the sudden dump of snow today may tell us otherwise. We are planning on doing hoop houses, or at least one, in the large bed as a greenhouse as well which will mean an earlier start. We're close the lake so we loose the snow and frost soonest and get a ton of sun exposure so we're pretty lucky.
Well, that's all for now! This is a long one as there was a lot of work in preparing the beds. Looking forward to sharing more! Send me links to your gardens and what you're up to this summer for eating healthily and growing your own food!

. . . . . . . . . .

It's an incredibly beautiful day here today in Nelson, B.C.. The sun is shining, the lake is twinkling, and I'm sitting here in my sunroom in a t-shirt and no socks (I love not wearing socks) without having to turn the heat on. Hurrah for spring!
It's been a rather busy week this one. Orders from ReLove's etsy shop have kept me super busy, as well as getting orders together for a few stores (exciting!). Oh! And ReLove Plan.et is in Ripping Giraffe's window display here in town too. Woot!
When I haven't been creating, I've been fortunate to have some lovely adventures as well. Tea dates are regular outings for me, it's time I get to spend with one of my best friends, catch up, talk about life, smile, laugh, and enjoy some girl time (and tea and raw treats of course). I also got to go to the hot springs this week with a couple girlfriends, and "Prince Vanilla" the lovely unicorn my friend's car dash (see yesterday's "this moment" post ;)). There were a few scattered moments bumping into friends I haven't seen in a while as well which are always nice. I also drove out with my hubby and one of our guy friends (who was kind enough to help us out with his truck) to my dad's garden centre (Dig at the junction) to pick up soil and manure for our garden beds. It was nice going out to see my dad. Our relationship has been estranged for a few reasons, all that have since passed and been resolved I feel. It's still difficult to trust again when your hearts been trampled over for so many years, but I don't have a place in my heart to dwell on that anymore. Letting him back into my life has been a gradual progression. I feel good about where things are now and look forward to things getting even better.
Life is a funny thing that way. If you would have asked me a year and a half ago if my family life would be where it is at today I probably would have laughed at you. But I understand the power of staying positive, of manifesting and attracting your desires and dreams to you through the Law of Attraction. I talk about the Law of Attraction a lot because, from experience, I know that it undoubtedly works. Whenever it doesn't work I don't get discouraged, I simply accept that I'm not ready for whatever it is I'm asking for or I may not be manifesting right. It can be hard to do, especially at the beginning. There are so many tricks and techniques, things to do and not to do, being in the right mindset and frequency--all of which I try to talk about and share on the blog. But I have seen some unimaginable miracles happen because of it, which is why I will continue to place such an emphasis on this Universal Law here at ReLove Plan.et.
Anyways. I am happy to have a relationship with my dad again. Any and every relationship is healable if the circumstances are right and if both people change. Bottom line, I'm rather happy with my family life and relationships at the moment. Oh, and our visit to the garden centre was nice too. I even got a new cactus friend for my room, which will be my little gift from my dad to cherish. :)

Yesterday we built our first garden bed. We're getting to start from scratch on our garden this year, which may be more work but is also pretty rewarding and will mean less work (weeding and such) once veggies start to grow. It was a fun and silly day. Cory (my husband) took a permaculture course a few years back and so he sort of knows the ropes (or some) of gardening. At least more than I know. I know nothing. He's teaching me and it's a lot of fun and quite amazing to see what nature can do. I think I'm going to start a progress post on the blog for our garden, sharing some pictures and what we've been up to with the garden since I feel it's such a valuable thing that everyone should be doing for themselves, whether it be a large garden or a tiny window box. Anything helps. Especially living in the world we live in today where vegetables are more expensive to buy than cheap garbage junk food that will only make you sick. Call me crazy but it seems counter-productive to "save money" on cheap food when you're going to end up paying far more on medical bills and feeling like the garbage you're eating. But that's just me. ;) I don't have a hard time justifying buying local organic produce. I like cooking (I used to hate it and never be motivated to), knowing what's Actually in your food, and reaping the benefits of Healthy food so that you Feel Good. Isn't that what life's about after all? Feeling Good!?
Holy ramble batwoman!
Yesterday was International Women's Day! (yes I have to throw this in here too) Women have come so far! We still have a long ways to go, but I feel like our progress is coming quickly. I know so many amazing women in my life. People often think of famous women when they think of inspiring women, but the truth is most of what I've learned is from the women directly in my life. My mother is such an amazing woman who has taught me so much. She deserves a shout out. She did what so many women struggle to do and got out of two abusive relationships, got out on her own, and loved her children so much. She taught me about love, health, listening and talking, communicating, honesty, friendship, about life. She is truly amazing. My sister is also amazing and I am so proud of all that she does and continues to do. She has two of the sweetest little girls and I know they are going to turn out as kick-ass as she is. She just started a blog and is already doing so many amazing things with it. She lives as self-sustaining as possible and is an awesome earth-conscious mama and supportive sister. You should check out her blog here: {LittleMountainHaven} and see her amazing garden and homesteading and my adorable nieces. ;) I've seen and known plenty of other amazing women, like friends that do amazing things. Even if the things we do sometimes seem small, there is no truly small amazing act. Truth is, women are freakin-fantastic and we don't get enough credit for this. So shine on you amazing women and learn to appreciate how truly amazing you are!!
Holy molly ramble batwoman!

Okay, I shall close this ramble by saying how much I truly love and appreciate all of you who read this blog, who support my etsy store and all of my work, and for all the many amazing people I've met via Facebook and social networking. There are so many amazing wonderful people out there and I feel so blessed to know you all.
I hope you're life is grand and you are learning to appreciate all the beautiful little and large moments. Much Love!

♥ Alter-Eco Clothing's New Gothic Doll & SteamPunk Collections ♥

Yes, today I get to do a little shameless self-promotion, but hey, why not? ;)

I am very excited about these two new lines!

Inspired by a mix of gothic and "pretty," lots of lace, and the look of Emilie Autumn... And a little SteamPunk-ish feel thrown in as I often do. ;)

I am always totally in love with the look and feel of SteamPunk and it definitely plays a huge part in much of my designs. The SteamPunk seems to get a but touchy for those "hardcore" SteamPunk addicts, however I feel that this collection is SteamPunk-"esque" and I totally love it. ;)

I am also super excited for some more summer items that will be a fun combination of both the "Gothic Doll" AND "SteamPunk" look--all kind of thrown into one for a beautiful wonderful magical look.
In case you don't know my designs very well, Alter-Eco is essentially whatever I want it to be. I get inspired all the time by different genres, different looks, and pull inspiration from all over the place. The designs that I come up with are all a mash-up of those various inspirations and I don't place limitations on my work by defining Alter-Eco Clothing as solely one thing. I believe it can be for everyone and anyone, whether you dress it up or dress it down.

I have lots more to share hopefully very soon, in the mean time check out the two new 2011 Spring/Summer collections now available at Alter-Eco Clothing on Etsy, as well as all the previous collections still available.

NeWS & UpDaTeS: Spring Cleaning...

Spring is finally in the air! After some debatable snow, it has mostly cleared and there is a warmth and freshness back in the air. This evening, the sky is a beautiful mix of pinkish-red hues as the sun sets, finally at a decent hour, overshadowed by clouds that promise rain some time in the next few days. Nature is a beautiful thing....now where was I? Ah yes, Spring Cleaning...

I've mentioned previously that I would like to put so much more time into the Alter-Eco Blog. It's admittedly slow-going, but it will and is happening. I thought this would be a good time to check in, say hello (HELLO!), and give you all an earful of updates. ~_^

Firstly, the reason the Blog has remained a little slow... Alter-Eco Clothing is BOOMING!!! I seriously can't thank all my amazing supporters and customers enough! Orders have been piling in and keeping me intensely busy this New Year! And it's just so awesome to see more people supporting Sustainable Fashion! Go Eco-Chicks!!!

I have two exciting New lines coming very soon; "Tattooed Zen", and "Alice In Wonderland". Saturday was the much-anticipated "Alice" Photoshoot, done with the talented BlackBird Photography, and everything just went so smoothly! I'm so excited to get the photos back!! You're going to Love the new designs!!

Since Alter-Eco Clothing is growing, it seems the appropriate time to bring Black Widow Clothing on an end. The line will be phased out by the end of May. For you music-lover, don't worry! I will be altering used Band shirts still at Alter-Eco and still be taking custom orders. So go raid your boyfriend's closet for your favorite shirts, remember the importance of Recycling! ~_^

This brings me to next bit of news; WE'RE MOVING!!!! The time has finally come for me and the hubby to leave Alberta behind us and return to Beautiful British Columbia. For those non-Canadians, this is a Big deal! BC is one of the most beautiful places on Earth, and Alberta is, well, cold and flat and dry and windy and ugly and, well, you get the idea. We live in Edmonton -- Oil country...hardly fitting for an Eco-freak like myself :p. So we're moving back to the land of forests and trees and nature and water and all things awesome ^_^. With the move, we are also taking some much needed time off and exploring this great country (and possibly dipping down into the States). What this means is that, sadly, the Etsy store will be closed for 1-2 Months. Don't Panic!! I'm telling you this for that reason, and to assure you that the store will be back open when we return and even better than before :D.

Soul-searching and spending time out in the wilderness and reconnecting with ourselves and mother-nature are a must for both of us. Life is Now and it's about new experiences, and we've put off this trip for much too long, especially as we both feel more and more importance for our planet. And we will have lots to share when we return. ^_^

The Blog will also likely be on hiatus until I return from our travels. But on the bright side, I'm sure it will give me even more to blog about ~_^.

Life is busy, busy, busy in the meantime. I'm starting to get my foot in the door with some more modeling. Been keeping connections with friends and family before the move. Starting to figure out our plan for the trip--and start packing :S. I'm also still getting my beautiful huge back Tattoo worked on--which I can't wait to share with you all once its finished ^_^. And my sister is due with her first baby any day now, as well we have a new one month baby nephew.

Really, just a reminder to breathe and enjoy every second of this beautiful Life, hectic or not, and to focus on the positive. "There are No Ordinary Moments"

Love you all!

xo

♥ Wednesday Favorites!!! ♥

Spring has been in the air as of lately and it has certainly brought a certain fresh feeling and warm thoughts of new beginnings. I am sad to say, however, that Edmonton has had a last retaliation from winter in the form of snow, snow, and more snow. I am personally not giving up on the feeling that it is spring, so I am keeping a big smile on my face and plunging forward regardless--and yes, I refuse to wear a winter jacket again until next winter.

So where am I going with this you may ask? Well, I have been disappointed with myself for the lack of new Posts to my Blog, and so, with this upbeat sense of new beginnings, I am determined to get more posts up on a regular basis. I'm starting with a new theme; Wednesday Favorites!

What is "Wednesday Favorites" you ask? Well, let's start with why Wednesday. I chose this day because, as it just so happens, I felt inspired today (which is, yes, Wednesday). It is the day before my "weekend" and for most of you it is half way through your work week, so why not add a little fun to get you through the other half ~_^?

What are these "favorites"? It is a list of my top picks for the week, whether it be music, eco products, books, movies, or absolutely whatever I feel like sharing that particular week.

Now, I would also like your participation! Yayyy! Whatever the theme I choose for the week, I would love to hear your thoughts and your picks as well so leave comments and some love!

So, this Wednesday Favorites is Favorite Blogs!! Why? Because I asked what people would like me to blog about and my husband oh so wittily (in his usual sarcasm) suggested I blog about blogs. So that is what I am doing (take that Mr. Smart Mouth!).

5. In Love with Handmade: (http://pili-inlovewithhandmade.blogspot.com/) Pili is another awesome diyscene member who has the best taste and is completely dedicated to everything handmade! Her blog shares this love and her findings, purchases, etc. She's an awesome gal and therefor her blog is equally awesome! ^_^

6. Little Village Naturals: (http://littlevillagenaturals.blogspot.com/) Another blog with the well-being of the planet in mind! She has some awesome themes for certain days of the week, most involving eco-consciousness! Plus, she blogged about me for her "Made in Canada Mondays". ~_^

Well, that's all for this week's picks. I am getting back into the world of blogging, and that includes being more interactive on other's blogs. Think there are some blogs that I should be checking out? Let me know and share your picks!! ♥♥
