☺ Stop Placing Yourself in a Category and Just Be Yourself! ☺

"I don't know if you're pretty or goth…"
"Why can't she be both?"

We live in such a strange world. To say the least. It's interesting to watch people, our behaviours, our judgements on others. In our continual strife to belong, to fit in, to feel better about ourselves we so easily fall off track and get wrapped up in concepts that truly don't matter and truly only cause us to be more lost down the rabbit hole of self discovery.
It's just strange to really take a step back and observe the way we put ourselves and others into categories. And in today's day and age there are soooo many labels we toss around, I mean we place people into groups like goths, punks, metal-heads, scenesters, hipsters, geeks, nerds, gamers, and so forth.
But you are Not a category. You are a Human Being.
You don't have to fit into any one category or label. Yet people cling to these labels as if they are their very identity. Everything they do is with the conscious thought as to whether or not their actions and behaviours make them a true "insert category here." You know what I'm talking about. Or at least hopefully you can open your eyes enough to. I've seen this behaviour forever. I saw metal-heads that actually Researched ways of how to be more metal. I see the hipsters that are too cool to talk to anyone other than other hipsters, only wear clothes that their friends are wearing as well. And let's not lose sight of this new bashing of girl gamers. Honestly, seeing a lot of the pro or bashing "girl gamers" was what finally initiated me to finally write about this topic. I mean there are so many girls coming forth now, admitting and being proud that they play video games, read comic books, and are "geeks." Then there's the backlash of "hardcore" girl gamers who rebut these new gamer girls by calling them "fakes" because they've been playing video games and being geeks from the start.
Obviously, this behaviour is not exclusive to just the gamer category, it is, of course, within every little clique. Everyone is always trying to outdo each other. Everyone is constantly trying to be the best "insert category here." And because of this, people are constantly bashing each other, whether it's within their own clique for not being "hardcore" enough, or if it's bashing another clique for being "lame" or "stupid."
And what do we know about people bashing that I've discussed before? That it comes from a place of insecurity. If you are feeling the need to put down others it's only because you are insecure about yourself. If you are lashing out then it's your own Self crying out. It's a problem with your Self, not with anyone else. Think about that for a moment. If you had complete and utter love for yourself you would Never feel the need to put down others. You would be so filled with love that it would never even cross your mind. Period.
So where am I going with this? Be Yourself!!!

People are thriving to be Someone, to be Something, to be the Best Someone. You Are already the Best. You are the Best version of Yourself! So stop trying to fit in and belong to a group. One single group, clique, category, label, or whatever you want to call it, cannot satisfy you and cannot define you. You are a complex human being with a multitude of interests, loves, dislikes, ambitions, and characteristics. Trying to mould yourself into a type-cast is counter productive.
I get it, I've been there, I mean who hasn't in one way or another? In school we try to fit in with some sort of group and it's where a lot of the type-casting and judging begins. How about it ends there? There is Nothing wrong with self-exploration, with trying out new things, with having interests within a label. For instance, just because you like a certain style of clothing doesn't make you a "insert category here." Chances are your Real Self includes a variety from most of these individual categories. If you want to fit in then start by fitting in your Own Skin. Accept what you do or don't like instead of having a stereotype define that for you.

I remember going through my own stages. I was a bit of a goth, I was a "rocker chick" (whatever that is), a metal-head, a nerd, a hippie… truth is I think I realized fairly early that I didn't fit into one single category though I may have tried or wanted to. Part of that might have been because I never really belonged in high school--I was a "frenchie" (for being in french immersion) for a long time but it wasn't really defining which I'm grateful for--so I never got stuck in one mindset. Anyway, I still went through the motions like most of us do of questioning my identity, of trying to fit in, of trying to find a clique to belong to. It just never happened. I still blocked out parts of myself I considered "uncool" or that I felt people would judge me for. Finally, I embraced all sides of myself. And I love myself, I love every part of myself, and that's because I accept, appreciate, and embrace all that I am.

I don't remember what it was I was wearing, but one day my brother looked at me and said "I don't know whether you're pretty or goth." My husband replied, "why can't she be both?" The gears in my brother's head were turning after that, I mean, what a concept!
You can't put me in a category, but you sure as hell can try. I still love metal music, but I also listen to just about everything else. I don't just wear black anymore, I wear a ton of colour and I wear a ton of different styles of clothing depending on my mood (if you've seen my clothing then you know this already). I'm still an eco-lovin', tree-huggin' vegan. I also sometimes play video games, though I have a tendency to get half way through a game and then stop. I love anime, but I am in no way an expert or "connoisseur," I simply enjoy watching some shows, checking out artwork, and drawing. Oh yeah, and I draw again--the side of me I tucked away. I write my own novel and draw my own anime characters. I have a fascination and love for character artwork which is probably why I love observing video games than actually playing them. I love kawaii and cute things, and drawing them of course. I dance around like a fool (sometimes in public). I'm usually smiling. And I feel however the hell I want to feel and do whatever the hell I want to do. Why? Because I accept all sides of myself and I'm not trying to impress anyone.

So my advice is to stop trying to impress others. It's the bottom line to all of it. We are trying to fit in so we are trying to impress people--whether you'll admit to it or not. On the flip side, don't judge others for they are either, it's just another sad form of bullying and it has no place. You are not better than anyone else and no one is better than you. Stop looking to others for approval and instead look to yourself. If you like something, then like it! If you don't like something then don't let it be a part of your character. If you are the biggest nerd around, then be the biggest damn nerd around, but you don't need to boast about it or impress people. If you love metal music but you also sometimes love listing to Britney Spears, then do it and don't be ashamed. If you like hipster clothing on some days and on other days you want to dress like a punk, then Do It!

Be Yourself and stop trying to fit in. It is the only way you will start to be genuinely Happy, to start Living life to the fullest, and forming true lasting relationships with others. Being someone you're not is a waste of you are. You are You, you are not a category. So fit into your own skin, be free to discover who you Really are, and never be ashamed.

We're taking back Mondays!!!
"Motivational Mondays" are fabulous tips to get you excited and pumped for the week!
Feeling low? Moody? Down on life? Well, that's what these posts are for! Time to feel awesome again and get some Positivity rolling! Just because it's Monday doesn't mean you can't have fun, smile, and enjoy Today! Apply these tips to your week and try to tell me that you don't start to see an improvement in your life! ;)
It's all about You! Change your perception, change your attitude, love your life! xo

*******************

Appreciate and Love your Own Body! While you’re busy coveting someone else’s body, someone else is busy coveting yours. Imagine how much happier we’d all be if we could embrace and love the bodies we have. Self love, body love, they are so important to make our lives more beautiful, to truly appreciate ourselves. No more jealousy or envy, love the body you were given.
Do the 30 Day Photo Challenge! No, it's not too late for me to tell you to do this if you haven't already started ;). And yes, I know it's a 30 day challenge and there are only 28 days in February. If you're getting caught up in the details then you're clearly not busy enough enjoying life and therefor this challenge is a must for you! ;) Here's why you should; because inspiration and beauty is all around you and I truly want you to start seeing it and using your imagination and appreciating the moment. Taking a photo is so much more than just an image before you, it's capturing a moment in time, it's cherishing a memory, it's appreciating what's right in front of your eyes. People sometimes think I'm crazy for taking as many photos as I do, but I love it and I'm appreciating the moment. :) So jump start this moment and take a photo! Look for inspiration and beauty everywhere!
Embrace the Dark to see the Light. We all have dark and light inside of us. We are human. Humans are multi-faceted, complicated beings. When we hop onto the train of happiness, working to improve ourselves we sometimes forget that balance is always needed and always within us. We are not perfect, we are not always smiling. We have sides of us we may not like. Side we find less flattering. And most of us have vices. Not liking those sides and pushing those sides out of the way isn't always your best defence. Continually working on your Self is fantastic and should always be a part of you, but becoming self-aware means not being ashamed of all your other sides either. Explore all the different sides so you can work on things.
Be a Superhero Fairy! I felt inspired by a post my sister wrote about her 2.5 year old daughter. She is just learning to use her imagination and it is a positive reminder for us adults to never lose sight of that childish bliss. Dressing up is fun, using our imaginations to transform ourselves into a whole other person is exciting. Continue to use that imagination! Run around with a cape on, dress up like a princess or superhero or whatever you'd like. Be a kid for a day. Never lose sight of true untainted imaginative bliss!
Tag! Around Christmas my husband and I got a bottle of wine for our landlords (because they're awesome and we love them) and we ended up listening to vinyl and drinking wine with them. It was an awesome evening. They let us use their hot tub while they were away, outside under the big moon--it was fantastic! But our landlady (?) mentioned how she wanted the hoodie I was wearing (one of my ReLove ones). So on the first when I was dropping off rent I also left her a little surprise gift of a ReLove hoodie of her own. She came up to the house the next day with a beautiful vase of flowers. They were from a sustainable company so she went out of her way to get them because she knows that I'm all eco-conscious. I thought it was the sweetest thing ever. She also said "tag" and laughed. So! Go ahead and play tag of your own! Pass on a thoughtful gift to someone!
Pay Attention. Following the last tip, I think it's a good time to remind you to pay attention. Pay attention to what people tell you, to what people like. Those small things in any relationship are so much more meaningful than a big extravagant present. The gifts that I've received in my life that came from a place of true thoughtfulness were always so much more memorable and so much more touching. But this is a practice to carry with you beyond gifts. Paying attention and knowing the people around you shows you care and listen. I mean, how many of you even know the colour of your friends' eyes? So be more observant and listen more.
"Some people are afraid of what they might find if they try to analyze themselves too much, but you have to crawl into your wounds to discover where your fears are. Once the bleeding starts, the cleansing can begin." ~ Tori Amos.  We are so easy to point out the flaws in others yet have such a hard time accepting our own. If you are constantly criticizing others then chances are it's because there is a lot about your own self that you have yet to accept and work on. So dig deep. There is nothing wrong with any parts of your self but there are always things you can work on. Don't be afraid of self-discovery, the deeper you dig the faster you can let go and heal.

[myself when I was little, always playing dress up and being a hero]

Much Love from me to you! Now get out there and Create the Best Damn Day ever!
Love Love!

☆ Sprouts and Sprouting! ☆

Sprouts, sprouts, wonderful sprouts. Those lovely little green scraggly things so packed full of nutrition and perfect over salads, sandwiches, stir frys, burgers, and even blended into a smoothie. Yes, today I am talking about Sprouts! They deserve an honourable mention, after all, especially seeing as I eat them every single day and they are oh so good for you. I mean, if there is a real and true superfood, Sprouts are it.

But, let's start with the basics… What are Sprouts?
Sprouting, itself, is the practice of germinating seeds to be eaten raw or cooked. Eating them raw means all the nutrients are preserved and amplified. Sprouts are also an awesome way to get fresh greens throughout the winter when the growing season is too cold. Mmm healthy fresh greens all year round! You can also sprout sooo many different things, including beans, nuts, seeds, and legumes!

Health Benefits:
Sprouts are said to be life-generating Bio-genic foods which offer the strongest support for cell regeneration.
They are high in essential nutrients, such as Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B6, and Vitamin K. They are also rich in minerals such as Iron, Phosphorous, Magnesium, Potassium, Manganese, and Calcium. Even more awesome? Sprouts have a ton of dietary fiber, Folate, and Omega-3 fatty acids (the ones most people's diets are lacking). Sprouting seeds, grains and legumes are also found to have higher content of these nutrients. For instance, most beans increase in Vitamin A by eight times after being sprouted, while other sprouts can increase in Vitamin C and B complexes by 200-1000%!
Another amazing benefit of sprouts is the increase in enzymes--something most of us are lacking due to highly processed and mostly cooked foods. Enzyme-rich foods keep our bodies healthy and fit and allow us to properly, and more easily, utilize the nutrients in foods. The process of sprouting modifies the array of minerals in sprouts so that they are more easily assimilated and digested by the body--meaning your body can use more of the nutrients as opposed to cooked foods.
And how about that protein?! When people think of greens and sprouts they don't often think of protein, but the truth is that sprouts are rich in the stuff, being up to 35 percent protein! Hurrah!
Also, when sprouts are grown to the chlorophyll rich two leaf stage, it has been shown they have been effective in overcoming protein-deficiency anaemia.
The daily consumption of these superfoods has also given many women relief from hot flashes and supported hormonal function. Sprouts are also essential in keeping free radicals at bay and are fantastic to prevent and fight disease and cancer.
It's also been said that broccoli sprouts are the Perfect food--you could actually survive on them because they contain Everything our bodies need. Not to mention broccoli sprouts are the super cure of fighting disease and cancer. Neat huh?

Sprouting
Alrighty, so sprouts are obviously awesome. Now I'm going to tell you that Anyone can sprout, right from home and have yummy sprouts all the time for Cheap--instead of buying them from grocery stores where they can be quite pricey.
I must be honest, part of me was a little reserved about writing this post, only because… my husband is the sprouter in the house. He really took it upon himself to explore it, checking out a multitude of ways to sprout and what to sprout and the best ways to sprout what. I'm super happy, obviously, I mean, I get fresh sprouts every day thanks to him. But sprouting is indeed something anyone and everyone can do no matter where you are, no matter what your climate, and no matter what your budget.
It can be a bit tricky while you're first starting out, but as with anything, practice makes perfect. Below I am going to share the basics of sprouting, and I will see if I can get my husband to help me out with writing up another more thorough post on all the ropes with all the details another time as he's become quite the expert. ;) I am also going to share our favourite sprouting jars because, trust me, it makes a World of difference in your success and ease to sprout.
So, let's get to it!

Basic Sprouting directions:

- Buy your organic sprouting seeds (organic).
- Find or purchase an awesome sprouting jar (I will share my suggestion below). You can use a one quart glass jar (like a mason jar) with a large mouth.
- For the mesh top, there are a few options: buy some cheesecloth and a few thick, strong rubber bands; buy a plastic or metal grid designed for the top of the mason jar (you can find these online or in health food stores); or (my favourite option) use the "Easy Sprout" sprouter I'm going to share below.
- Place around three tablespoons of sprouting seeds with at least three times the amount of purified water into the jar.
- Gently shake the jar with lid until all the seeds are soaked.
- Take off the lid and place the cheesecloth (or other mesh) over the mouth, securing with a rubber band.
- Allow the seeds to soak for six to twelve hours, then drain them thoroughly and rinse.
- Leave the jar on its side and away from direct sunlight. Repeat this process three times or until the sprouts manifest fully. This usually takes a couple days, depending on what you are sprouting (the seed packages will let you know the times).
Refrigerate what isn't eaten, will keep for about a week.

Again, these are just some basic directions to give you an idea of the process. You'll want to experiment and explore it more for yourself though. The only thing to watch for is mold. So make sure you are rinsing them thoroughly and not neglecting your poor sprouts. Using the glass jars and mesh screens also tend to make keeping the mold away more difficult. We've tried a few different sprouting jars and products and Nothing compares to the product I'm about to share with you:

Awesome Sprouters!
First, allow me to introduce to you the Easy Sprout "the easiest sprouter ever!"
My husband bought these after much fuss with glass jars and they are amazing! So awesome that we got one each for my siblings for christmas… and two more for us… with plans to get another one.
This Sprouter has everything you need, with a two part container and a good lid and strainer. It's design also means less rinsing and, unless you seriously neglect your sprouts, no molding!  I can't really describe how amazing these are, but after trying with glass jars and other sprouters and then trying this one, you'll understand why. Best of all, these are only about $15.00. Absolutely worth the price! We have all of our jars always on the go, rotating, with new sprouts so that we have a continuous supply. It's simply amazing!

The only time we use a glass jar method now is with some larger sprouts, such as chickpeas.

If you want to get really fancy then you can also get an automatic sprouter (like we do, because, you know, we're crazy ;)). We bought this amazing "Fresh Life" automatic sprouter, which is, obviously, amazing. We use it mostly for sunflower sprouts while we use the "Easy Sprout" jars for kale and salad mix sprouts. But the nice thing about this one is the automatic rinsing and that it has four different "compartments" so that you can have four different types of sprouts all going at once.

My favourite Sprouts!
I figure, why not end this with my favourite sprouts. ;)
Kale sprouts are heavenly! We always have a large jar going so that we can add a handful (I mean, literally, a handful, no exaggeration) of these sprouts to our morning smoothies. You can't even taste them and they blend up great. They are a great way to get your greens in the morning, and especially so if you are trying to get more greens in picky kids (I promise they won't have a Clue that there are any in there!).
Second to kale sprouts, we usually have sunflower sprouts on the go. They are also great in smoothies (again can't taste them) and are also delicious on top of salads and stir frys. We have a great salad mix as well and so many more greens.
We are also in the new habit of sprouting chickpeas. We got a huge bag of organic chickpeas during a bulk sale at our local coop so now we have a constant supply of chickpeas. I used to always buy the canned stuff because I didn't want to have to soak them and then cook them for hours. But now we just have jars of sprouted chickpeas on the go, which completely minimizes the energy to cook and prepare. They are great raw in salads, in raw hummus (I'll be sharing a recipe soon), or lightly cooked in stir frys or any other dish that calls upon the use of regular chickpeas, with the maximized benefits of being sprouted! I won't lie, I'm not a big fan of the raw taste of them alone, but once you add them to things they taste great and are nice and softly crunchy. :)
There are always new things to sprout! We've sprouted quinoa and lentils before too and plan on getting back into that now that we have this sprouting thing figured out.
Peace out for now! Hope you too will begin your sprouting journey!
