☆ Green Tip: Natural Cleaning Solutions! ☆

No one should want to or have to breathe in nasty chemicals from their home cleaners, but sadly most of us do. While you may feel like you're cleaning away dirt, stains, and muck, you're also spreading countless toxic chemicals through your home with those commercial cleaners. Not to mention the effect those have on the environment. If you have pets or children then that's another concern for their little systems. Many of those chemicals stay in our systems as well. Some are carcinogenic, others cause allergic reactions, reproductive problems, asthma and breathing problems, and a whole slew of other health problems. And don't even get me started on those those anti-bacterial cleaners and hand washes! (I'll rant and explain about those in another post ;p)
So what to do? There are plenty of eco-friendly natural cleaners on the markets, though you should still be reading labels as not all are really that great for you either and many companies like to up their "organic" level with water. Sad I know, but it's true. So be weary of greenwashing and always read labels.
If you don't want to fork up the money on eco cleaners then there are plenty of alternatives you can make using ingredients you likely already have in your home. Affordable and convenient? Win win!

White vinegar
White vinegar is a superhero amongst natural cleaning products. It can replace most of the products you might use now, not to mention it's safe, completely natural, and cheap cheap cheap! If you're concerned about the smell, fear not, it disappears when it dries, if you still don't like the smell then add your favourite essential oils for a lovely aroma.
  • As an all-purpose kitchen cleaner for counters and floors, mix 1 part white vinegar with 1 part water in a spray bottle.
  • Prevent oven buildup and shower mildew by wiping down surfaces with a cloth and vinegar.
  • Use as a natural fabric softener by adding 1/2 cup to the rinse cycle of your wash!
  • Get rid of rings in your toilet bowl by using pure vinegar.
  • Clean windows by mixing 1 part vinegar with 4 parts water in a spray bottle.

Lemon!
The acid in lemons is a great degreaser and cleaner, making this little lemon a cheap and powerful natural way to clean your home.
  • As a degreaser in the Kitchen: use the rind to to scrub your pots and pans, and add the juice of a lemon to your favorite dishwashing liquid to make it even more effective.
  • Combat odors and stains: fill a spray bottle with 1 part lemon juice and 1 part water. Mist countertops and cutting boards, wait a minute or two for the mixture to work its magic then wipe away.
  • When you're done, toss the lemon rind down the garbage disposal to fill the whole room with its uplifting aroma.
  • Brighten your white without bleach in the Laundry Room: It may not be able to get out super strong stains like wine or grass stains, but for a normal wash of whites it will get the brightness back with a long soak in the hot water and lemon juice.
  • In the Bathroom: the low pH of lemons make it naturally antibacterial. Add 1/2 cup of lemon juice to your toilet bowl and let it soak for ten minutes, then flush away the germs.
  • For mold and mildew: use the acidity of a lemon spray. It's also great at breaking up mineral deposits on the shower door.

Baking Soda!
Who doesn't have baking soda already at home? It works great for stubborn things like cleaning your grill and removing coffee or tea stains. It also works to spot treat wallpaper, books, and porcelain. So what else can it clean?

  • Sprinkle baking soda on a damp cloth, wipe and rinse with clean water to use on countertops, tiles and other surfaces.
  • Clean away burnt food from pots and pans by soaking the pot or pan overnight with a scoop of baking soda in hot water; the burnt food will come off easily.
  • To remove stains (from most surfaces) use baking soda paste (3 parts baking soda, one part water), apply and leave on overnight, then scrub or wipe clean.
  • Sprinkle your carpets with baking soda to remove nasty odors. Let stand for at least fifteen minutes and vacuum!

Salt!
Another easy to find item already at home and works fantastic to remove spills and stains!
  • Remove blood and wine stains overnight by soaking in cold water and salt.
  • Remove burnt food from pots and pans by adding salt immediately to help the burnt material come off easier.
  • Clean your coffee pot by adding 2-3 tablespoons of salt to the pot and bring to a boil.
  • In the bathroom, restore white enamel on sinks, bathtubs, or toilets by making a paste of turpentine mixed with salt. Apply the paste and let sit 15 minutes, then wipe with a damp sponge.
  • Unclog a sink by mixing ½ cup salt, ½ cup baking soda, and ¼ cup cream of tartar and pour into drain. Then pour a kettle of boiling water and let sit at least two hours, then run water to clear out.

Hydrogen Peroxide
Sometimes an old-school cleaner like hydrogen peroxide is the best turn-to alternative instead of nasty bleach and bleach-based products that are also loaded with other chemicals. Hydrogen peroxide is fantastic for it's non-toxic antibacterial, fungal, mold, and mildew properties, making it great for cleaning cuts and wounds, but also a fantastic all-purpose cleaner!
All you need is a bottle of hydrogen peroxide (3% should do), a spray nozzle and you're good to go!
  • Remove stains by spraying directly on stain and allow to dry. Repeat if stain is still visible. For blood stains, apply directly on stain and allow to sit for 1 minute. Rub, then rinse with cold water.
  • Another alternative for cleaning tubs and tiles. Simple spray with a layer of hydrogen peroxide, followed by a layer of vinegar and scrub away!

What are your favourite go-to home cleaners? Or what genuinely eco brands do you use instead?

☆ Carbon Footprint of… Tea and Coffee?! ☆

Another awesome infographic coming your way, today by "Green Steve" regarding the carbon footprint of your tea and coffee! While the original post is directed at you lovely brits overseas, and while the statistics are from the UK, I think the lesson itself can easily be applied to North America, if not most of the world. It's all about being more conscious of our footprints and doing what we can to reduce them. Small steps add up, never forget that.

So, without further ado, check out the carbon footprints of your tea and coffee! ;)

☆ "The Secret Life of Garbage" ☆

Another info graph I felt worth sharing, because this information is valuable and may encourage greater action.
I am personally very proud to say that we go through a single almost full black garbage bag a year--that's between two people (and two cats). Even so we're working to reduce that to next to nothing. I'm aware it will take some practice but for now I'm still pretty proud that we have reduced our waste by this much. It is absolutely possible for anyone to do so with a little effort and conscious thinking. We make this possible by…

  • Paying attention to packaging and buying things with less or no packaging.
  • Buying in Bulk and reusing our bulk bags.
  • Recycling anything and everything that we can.
  • Composting all our food remains (which, proudly, is usually just veggie and fruit cores and peels).
  • And not over-consuming in general.

Created by: Business Degree

How much garbage do you go through? Do you recycle? Have a compost? Please consider making some changes, they are really not much work and can make such a huge difference for the world.

♥ Herbolution Giveaway!!! ♥

I am very pleased (and ecstatically excited) to be sharing this week's wonderful Giveaway, hosted by Herbolution

Yes, you heard right, you could get your hands on fabulous goodies by the company that I've shared with you several times previously here at ReLove Plan.et!

"Herbolution is committed to invention and production of natural, organic, earth-friendly, sustainable, energy efficient, free of synthetic preservatives, biodegradable and handmade in USA personal care products, accessories and gifts for the whole family."
~Herbolution

You will fall in love with this wonderful little company! Herbolution uses truly wholesome natural and organic ingredients, so you don't have to worry whether or not they are (as I like to put it) "human-friendly." You won't find any harmful cancerous or toxic ingredients here, unlike so many misleading "natural" or "organic" brands you find even at health stores--and remember, I'm the personal care products police and I won't recommend anything that doesn't meet my high standards for safety. ;) Yes, Herbolution takes the guessing right out. Their products are individually handcrafted in small batch production and with an honest list of ingredients that are 100% natural and are either organic or wild-harvested or locally harvested--plus most of their products are 100% vegan! Herbolution also takes earth-friendly and sustainable approaches in all aspects of their business. You can rest assured that your skin (and the earth) is being treated with love and respect.
Their products work better than anything else I have ever tried, and the smells, textures, and feel of all their products make a divinely blissful experience.
So again, I say, you will fall in love with Herbolution! Now before I get to the giveaway details, let's get to know Herbolution…

*********************************************

Tell us a bit about yourself.
We are a loving family (Sasha and Veronika) and a company (Herbolution) who are conscious about current state of The Planet which directly affects our health and well-being. After long searches for a healthy and natural personal care products we came to a conclusion that many companies that try to take good care of their customers take very little care of the Earth and visa verse. So we decided to combine the two goods while putting more accent on really natural and chemical-free craftsmanship of products that are used for enhancement of health and well-being of the body and soul as well as home environment.
How did Herbolution come to be?
The idea of making really natural personal care products came to our minds after we stepped onto a path of healthy and environmentally conscious lifestyle. Our knowledge of herbs plus young, fresh and passionate drive to "change the world" gave birth to Herbolution - an alternative to commonly used personal care products or even sometimes fake "natural" options from big corporations. Our path is fresh, narrow and steep, but Herbolution is strong in its beliefs and is confident in eco- and health consciousness of present and future customers.
Where do you find inspiration?
Our love of Herbs, sincere care for Planet, love to each other and creative urge to craft things that are beneficial to both Earth and people and enjoyable and the same time – all that is our inspiration and never-ending source of ideas.
If you had all the money in the world, what handmade item would you buy?
Let us answer a bit different question:)
If you could get any handmade item in the world for free – what it would be?
We would get an artisan crafted sail boat and would take a trip around the world on it ;)
What got you started on an eco-friendly path?
Permaculture certification course that we took several years ago went deep into affects of human activity on Nature and Environment in general and provided smart solution to create a “permanent” ever-growing culture replacing the current regressive culture that destroys itself and life around us.
Random fact?
“Only 8 percent of the total plastic waste generated in 2010 was recovered for recycling.“
This means that 92 out of a 100 of plastic bottles or containers or bags go to environment to pollute for hundreds of years our air, oceans and soil. We at Herbolution do our best to offer our products in plastic-free containers (currently 85% of all our products are plastic-free) and ship all orders in 100% biodegradable packaging.
Best piece of advice for life in general?
Remember that we depend on harmony of life on the Planet and should appreciate all Nature as much as a child appreciates his parents as he depends on them so greatly.

[Veronika and Sasha]

☯ What's in my Closet: Preserve ToothBrush & Razor ☯

You are supposed to toss out your toothbrush every three months, and we all know how quickly you go through disposable razors. When you stop to actually pay attention, that's a lot of waste that accumulates very quickly, and it's usually plastic that won't decompose and can't be recycled. So what is an eco-being to do?

In my closet? Preserve Toothbrush with the travel case that I recently picked up. Preserve Triple Razor with the Replacement Blades so that I can hold onto the handle forever ;).

Why do I choose Preserve? What makes them so amazing?

Preserve  is a wonderful company that makes all their products from recycled yogurt containers and other #5 plastic containers. The handles of both the razor and the toothbrushes are made from 100% recycled materials, are powered by yogurt cups, are recyclable after use, and are BPA free.
When most communities don’t accept these common #5 containers for recycling you can rest assured those plastics are going to good use instead of becoming unnecessary waste. Preserve does this through their "Gimme 5 program" offereing a simple way to save these plastics and give them a second life. So collect your #5 plastics, save them up, clean them out, and drop them at one of their retail locations, at the "Preserve Gimme 5" bins. And if you don’t live near one of their Gimme 5 retail locations, you can send them by mail to be recycled as well!

Some more fun facts about Preserve's Recycling Environmental Efforts:
At least 54% less water than virgin polypropylene
At least 64% less greenhouse gases (in CO2 equivalents) than virgin polypropylene
At least 75% less oil than virgin polypropylene
At least 48% less coal than virgin polypropylene
At least 77% less natural gas than virgin polypropylene
At least 46% less electricity than virgin polypropylene

Preserve Nested Mixing Bowls, Set of 3I haven't yet tried their other products but am excited to get my hands on them! They also have Jr. Toothbrushes in the personal care line, and have a Tableware and Kitchen line, including plates, bowls, cups, mixing bowls, storage containers, colanders, measuring cups, and cutting boards--all 100% recycled, BPA and melamine free of course.

You can find their products at health stores and other grocers, and if you can't then they are totally affordable online through their website.

Peace & Love,
xo

☯ What's in my Closet: Orange Dipped in Chocolate by Herbolution ☯

I have already mentioned how much I love Herbolution. They are an amazing little company run by some wonderful people, containing some of the most amazing body products I have had the pleasure of using. I think it is safe to say that I have a healthy addiction ;) and my body loves the organic and healthy ingredients.

I tried their "Dipped Orange in Chocolate" Body Polish in the sample size over christmas and just fell completely in love. While the scent immediately won me over, the scrub is also simply amazing, with a wonderful exfoliating effect combined with the moisturizing benefits of cocoa butter to leave my skin silky smooth and beautiful. However, my love for the yummy orange-chocolate combination drove me to approach the lovely Sasha and Veronika of Herbolution about making a body butter and body spray. Being the wonderful people that they are, they made the products and I am very excited to be the first to try them!

When my package arrived I'll admit that I may have squealed like a little girl. As usual, I was delighted by their amazing efforts to be as earth-friendly as possible. From the recycled box, banana-paper invoice and note, biodegradable peanuts and wrapping, and the friendly glass-jars the products come in, this company rocks! Opening the new products was like christmas morning all over again, enthralled by the aspect of new yummy scents and products to indulge in. My senses were immediately humming in the playful fragrance of sweet orange and rich chocolate. So good it is tempting to eat--although I don't recommend it ;).
The body butter is made with lovely and enriching aloe butter, jojoba oil and other healthy and beneficial organic ingredients. As with all of their body butters, it is such a wonderfully rich moisturizer that is also filled with the nourishment of vitamins. The butter melts on the skin upon contact while that lovely aroma fills your nostrils and even the driest skin can feel relief from their natural and nourishing ingredients.
The body spray is perfect as well, the blend of scents is so yummy I can't help use the stuff all day and make everyone around me smell it too.

I can't put into words just how much I love these new products. Chocolate and orange...you can't really go wrong with that combination. Throw in the fact that Herbolution makes products that work, are chemical-free, good for you and good for the planet and, well, you just can't go wrong here.
If you haven't yet, now is your chance to jump on their etsy shop and indulge yourself. I promise you won't regret it. ;)

Peace & Love,
xo

☆ What's Going On: Cookware & Bakeware Beware ☆

So I've mentioned a couple time in my Vegan Recipes Segments that I use an Eco-friendly frying pan and cookware vs evil Teflon. It took a while for it to occur to me that lots of people don't know why non-stick pans are bad.
I'd first heard it as a teenager from my mother who had said they kill baby birds. I didn't want to kill baby birds so it was an immediate no-no for me. Later I found out why...

The big problem is Teflon

First, what is Teflon?
Teflon is a trademarked combination of fluoropolymers (produced by the DuPont company and licensed to many cookware manufacturers) that coats pans to give them a non-stick surface.
Why is it bad?
PFOA is the compound used to manufacture Teflon and ranks as nastier than pesticides like DDT when it comes to indestructibility in the ecosystem. It is bad for nature, bad for wildlife, and bad for you.
Overheated non-stick-coated pans can release toxic fumes that will literally kill a canary if it were in your kitchen. Teflon claims that such high-temperature burning doesn't happen under normal circumstances and that otherwise, the stuff is safe. Still, who hasn't burned the bottom of a pan? And it is still advised that you should keep your pets out of the kitchen while cooking with the stuff. Safe huh? Plus, 95% of humans have the chemical tied to non-stick surfaces in our bloodstream. There are nearly a dozen studies that tie it to thyroid damage and as a likely human carcinogen (cancer-causing). Not to mention, every molecule you get in your system will be with you for life! Scary!
What's worse is that the chemical is turning up in wildlife at alarming levels, even in the systems of polar bears way up north who have never been near the stuff!

The stuff isn't just in your non-stick pans either. It is used in cookware, burger wrappers, popcorn bags, french fry cartons, and candy packing.

There is no time like the present to eliminate the stuff from your life.

There has been no official heed to toss out your old non-stick pans or product recalls, but the chemical is on its way out. Health Canada is in the process of phasing it out, but we all know how slow and backwards such processes can be, so better to do something about it yourself.

As always, I won't leave you without any solutions. ~_^

There are lots of eco-friendly non-stick pans coming out on the market. Always make sure you know what it is you're buying though as companies can be tricky with the way they word their products to make them seem earth-friendly and healthy when they are not.
I have "Earth Chef" brand that use a Ceramic surface instead. It is a tad stickier then Teflon but still great for cooking and much much more durable (and the surface doesn't flake off into the food!).
Stainless Steel is always an option, just remember you'll have to add more oil to avoid sticking. Cast iron skillets and Glass are good options as well. Light-weight titanium is good, though can be pricey. Be careful though, some get their non-stick surface from the same chemicals as Teflon (sneaky bastards!), so make sure to do a little research on the manufacturer's corporate website to be sure.
For Bakeware; Ceramics (make sure the glaze is lead-free though), stainless steel, and Silicone which is highly accessible-- they may look a bit weird and come in bright colors but are a great and safe alternative.

Peace & Love,
xo

♥ Wednesday Favorites: Gifts that Give Back ♥

In light of the holiday season approaching, I have been pondering christmas presents--of course, because advertising has you thinking about Christmas so darn early ;p

Last year, the hubby and I didn't really do Christmas Presents. Why? Because we aren't all for the "spend tons of money" consumerism side of the Holidays. We would rather do something special and appreciate the time spent with each other and loved ones. Isn't that was holidays should be about?

Well, I am still buying Christmas presents for some people because not everyone has the same views that I have and it would be awefully rude to not get people presents. But it got me thinking, what can I buy but still keep to my views and not be so consumer based? Two answers: One, which is Buy Locally and Handmade--but I will be doing that wednesday favorites next week ;). This week; Gifts that give Back! ^_^

WWF Adoptions: You know by now how much I love WorldWildLife Fund, and I know I have mentioned this one before, but it is such a great gift idea! I mean, what better gift than to "adopt" a species?! There are over 100 species to choose from and each comes with a soft plush version of your adopted animal wrapped in a cloth WWF gift bag, a formal adoption certificate, a color photo of your species, and more, including a personalized letter to your lucky gift recipient. ^_^ What your adoption does is support WWF's global efforts to protect animals and their habitats and helps protect the future of nature.

Adopt-A-Farm Animal Project: Farm Sanctuary is amazing! They work to protect farm animals from cruelty, inspire change in the way society views and treats farm animals, and promote compassionate vegan living. Their Adopt-A-Farm Animal Project is a way that you can get involved and help out. "Farm Sanctuary's shelter animals are in need of loving "parents" to sponsor their monthly feed, shelter and veterinary care costs. By participating in the Adopt-A-Farm Animal Project, you help provide the necessary support to care for a rescued farm animal and defend all farm animals against cruelty."
Much better idea than "things" for the holidays, right? ^_^

David Suzuki's Wish List: Over at the David Suzuki Foundation there is yet another great way to give back this holiday season AND be creative while doing so! There are several neat ideas and projects to choose from, including a "lump of coal", except this one isn't a "naughty friend" idea anymore, it support a brighter energy future that uses clean, renewable power instead of fossil fuels like coal. Or there's things like the "Critter Passport", "Green Key", "Planet Prescription", and more.
"David Suzuki’s Wish List helps to protect nature in Canada. These symbolic gifts are unique, meaningful, and help us protect the diversity of nature and our quality of life on Earth, now and for the future. Donate to a project in honour of your loved one, and send an e-card saying the gift will support what really matters: a healthy, happy environment. It’s a present that lasts the whole year long!"

There are plenty of ways you can give back to the earth this holiday season so keep that in mind. And don't forget to wrap presents in reusable bags or newspaper or other creative recycling ideas! ~_^

Got any Christmas gift ideas that You might choose this Holiday season that give back? Do share with the rest of us!

Peace & Love

☮ "Be the Change" Clothing & Consumerism ☮

We all do it, we love to buy Things. We all have our vices. Our society teaches us to consume. It is what our economy is based on. The system does not work. But it is why we love to buy so much. We have essentially been taught: You are what you Buy. Your social status, your livelihood, your happiness all depends on what you wear and what you buy. This is not truly the case, of course, but it is the illusion that is embedded into our brains by lovely Society. And it has been working. We are perfect little puppets without even being aware of it.

It is wrong for so many reason, but that rant is for another time ;)

"Things" do not bring true Happiness. A momentary "high"...maybe. But not Happiness or any feeling of true fulfillment.

Our relentless need to consume is becoming much too taxing on our environment. Economy has been placed above Ecology. And this simply can not work. It is why we will end up killing our planet, and therefore ourselves... all in the name of consumerism and Things.

Imagine another species of life from another planet observing us... Oh, how did these people die? Well, they destroyed their planet so they could have "things". Wha??!!!! *smacks forhead*

Is this reaaaally how we want to go out??

Here's a little look into the Fabric Industry....
It is one of the most polluting on the planet! Cotton soaks up 10% of the world's pesticides and 25% of its insecticides--many of which are carcinogens (cancer-causing), toxic, and cause major water pollution. It takes 1/2 pound of chemicals to produce one regular old t-shirt. Is it worth it? Do you even really want to wear toxins on your skin?

Anyways, there's my little ramble for the day. Now, here are some tips to greening up your footprint when it comes to "Things" and Consumerism...

Buy Organic or Sustainable: such as Organic Cotton, Hemp, Soy, Bamboo, or recycled fibres for clothing and other items. There are so many choices out there now so there's really no excuse! If you have a favorite designer, ask them to use eco-friendly materials as well. Remember consumer-demand is everything!

Buy Second Hand! There is nothing less environmentally straining than buying something second-hand! We have enough materials out there to easily please us. Be creative and go exploring. There are plenty of fun treasures to uncover and reinvent!

Buy FairTrade & Close to Home: On top of the above, just as equally important is to be aware of WHERE the products are made. No one wants to support child labour and unfair labour laws! Also, mass production in foreign countries with no pollution laws is a frightening thought--even if the tag does read "Organic." Not to mention all those items then have to cross oceans and travel all over the place before they get to stores and then you. Buying Locally is so important and supporting Handmade goods as well. There are sooooo many amazing products out there that fit this ideal. p.s. Etsy is a great place to search! :)

Buy LESS: We don't need to consume as much as we do. Remember, you can't buy Happiness. Be happy with what you have. Splurge every once in a while, sure, but learn some restraint. Plus, it's easier on the pocket. Simplicity is environmentally friendly and it's sexy! ;)

Clear out your Closet: Chances are, your closet is over-crowded. There's probably items in there that you barely wear or maybe have only worn once, or maybe that you didn't even know were in there. What are they doing there?? If you don't wear them, give them away, donate them, or repurpose them--but don't just throw them out, that's wasteful. I cleared out my own closet during the recent move--twice. Once while packing, and again when unpacking. I was embarrassed by the humungous pile I had laying on my bed. Someone else will want and/or appreciate some of those things you have, so give a little!

Re-Wear, Re-Wear, and Wear again! Why on earth do we wear one item and then throw it in the laundry? This is so wasteful! I re-wear my clothes many many times before they go to my laundry machine. And don't give me the smelly excuse. I sweat a lot, I'm a smelly Italian girl ;) and I still manage to re-wear my clothes without being stinky. Even if you just wash the arm-pits of a hoodie and re-wear it, this is still much better than clothes going directly to your laundry machine.

Do Laundry Less: The above tip is a good one to do Laundry less. It is a new commitment for me, even though I already only did laundry once ever three weeks. I now go at least a month and a half before doing laundry! It is a great feeling to know I can manage to do this! :)

Hang Dry! If you're able to, absolutely hang-dry your clothes! This eliminates the need for wasted energy from your dryer--and again, is easier on the pocket.

Even though I was already very eco-conscious in my buying habits before, I still wanted to improve. I have now made
the Commitment to only buy Organic or Eco-friendly Products.
Not just for clothes, but for everything I buy, ever.
I'm enjoying it thoroughly and it is incredibly rewarding. Sometimes you have to dig a little harder if there is something you're after, but there is always a solution. Plus, you end up finding some really neat things this way! ^_^

Remember, no matter what Society will have you believe, You are NOT what you Buy!

What are Your new Earth Commitments lately?

Peace & Love,
xo
