☺ "Fuck Diets"☺

The other day, a friend of mine shared this article with me, appropriately named "Fuck Diets" by "Rage Grrl" over at Ladybud, and I think you should all hop over there and read it too. It's cleverly written and boasts the body positivity we should all have for ourselves as opposed to the backwards societal image crammed in our faces left and right by the media.
I am deciding to tell you about this article because it's bloody brilliant and I feel that every woman (or man for that matter) needs to read it. So, head over and give it a read, and be sure to share with all your friends! Because in today's day and age we need to start thinking better about our bodies and have a better grasp on what's wrong with the society we are currently living in and how it makes us feel.

And if you want some more body positive reading then be sure to check out my article on

❀ Question of the Week! ❀

I decided I'm starting something new for my Saturday posts as I haven't had a set theme for this day of the week yet. I also have been wanting to get my lovely readers (yes that would be you!) to feel a little more involved and get some fun interaction going. Therefore, say hello to Saturday's "Question of the Week." What are these questions? Absolutely anything and everything under the moon (beyond even!) that I feel like asking and hearing your fun responses about. ;)
So, let's get straight to it…

Question of the Week... *drum roll please*

The topic? Armpits!
What do you naturals do to keep your armpits smelling lovely and fresh? What deodorant do you use? Any tips to keeping the smell and sweat at bay? Or do you simply not care about using a natural deodorant? Or not care if you smell a little?
Do you shave your armpits? Why or why not? Ever thought about it?

Tell me the story to your armpits. ;)

☆ Dirty Dozen (Chemicals to Avoid in Cosmetics) ☆

I wrote a Two Part article some time ago concerning the hundreds of nasty chemicals that are usually found in Cosmetics and Beauty Products:

Today's post is a simplified version of the top "dirty dozen" chemicals to avoid, making it an easy place to start without getting too overwhelmed.
This list came from the David Suzuki Foundation when I received a small pamphlet in the mail that is perfect to stick in your wallet or to put up on your bathroom mirror to double check your beauty products and cosmetics.

The truth is that it is quite horrifying just how many toxic chemicals are allowed to be in products we put in direct contact with our skin. U.S. researchers report that one in eight of the 82,000 ingredients used in personal care products are industrial chemicals, including carcinogens, pesticides, reproductive toxins, and hormone disruptors. Many products also include plasticizers (chemicals that keep concrete soft), degreasers (used to get grime off auto parts), and surfactants (they reduce surface tension in water, like in paint and inks). And yes, those are being put on your skin, not to mention the impact such chemicals have on the environment and wildlife.

The David Suzuki Foundation surveyed Canadians to see how many of the "Dirty Dozen" ingredients appeared in their cosmetics; their findings show that 80 per cent of entered products contained at least one of these toxic chemicals!

So, if that's not enough for you to get thinking about what's in your cosmetics it should. This is a good place to start:

"You can avoid harmful chemicals when you use our shopper's guide, and audit your bathroom cupboard using this list of harmful ingredients"

The Dirty Dozen:

1. BHA and BHT
Used mainly in moisturizers and makeup as preservatives. Suspected endocrine disruptors and may cause cancer (BHA). Harmful to fish and other wildlife.
2. Coal tar dyes: p-phenylenediamine and colours listed as "CI" followed by a five digit number
In addition to coal tar dyes, natural and inorganic pigments used in cosmetics are also assigned Colour Index numbers (in the 75000 and 77000 series, respectively).
Look for p-phenylenediamine hair dyes and in other products colours listed as "CI" followed by five digits.1 The U.S. colour name may also be listed (e.g. "FD&C Blue No. 1" or "Blue 1"). Potential to cause cancer and may be contaminated with heavy metals toxic to the brain.
3. DEA-related ingredients
Used in creamy and foaming products, such as moisturizers and shampoos. Can react to form nitrosamines, which may cause cancer. Harmful to fish and other wildlife. Look also for related chemicals MEA and TEA.
4. Dibutyl phthalate
Used as a plasticizer in some nail care products. Suspected endocrine disrupter and reproductive toxicant. Harmful to fish and other wildlife.
5. Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives
Look for DMDM hydantoin, diazolidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea, methenamine and quarternium-15. Used in a variety of cosmetics. Slowly release small amounts of formaldehyde, which causes cancer.
6. Parabens
Used in a variety of cosmetics as preservatives. Suspected endocrine disrupters and may interfere with male reproductive functions.
7. Parfum (a.k.a. fragrance)
Any mixture of fragrance ingredients used in a variety of cosmetics — even in some products marketed as "unscented." Some fragrance ingredients can trigger allergies and asthma. Some linked to cancer and neurotoxicity. Some harmful to fish and other wildlife.
8. PEG compounds
Used in many cosmetic cream bases. Can be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, which may cause cancer. Also for related chemical propylene glycol and other ingredients with the letters "eth" (e.g., polyethylene glycol).
9. Petrolatum
Used in some hair products for shine and as a moisture barrier in some lip balms, lip sticks and moisturizers. A petroleum product that can be contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which may cause cancer.
10. Siloxanes
Look for ingredients ending in "-siloxane" or "-methicone." Used in a variety of cosmetics to soften, smooth and moisten. Suspected endocrine disrupter and reproductive toxicant (cyclotetrasiloxane). Harmful to fish and other wildlife. Read more »
11. Sodium laureth sulfate
Used in foaming cosmetics, such as shampoos, cleansers and bubble bath. Can be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, which may cause cancer. Look also for related chemical sodium lauryl sulfate and other ingredients with the letters "eth" (e.g., sodium laureth sulfate).
12. Triclosan
Used in antibacterial cosmetics, such as toothpastes, cleansers and antiperspirants. Suspected endocrine disrupter and may contribute to antibiotic resistance in bacteria. Harmful to fish and other wildlife.

☯ What's in My Closet; Zosimos Botanicals! ☯

This Earth Day I am all too happy to share with you another  wonderful cosmetics company I discovered during my thorough hunt for safe, vegan, and earth-friendly products. Allow me to introduce you to Zosimos Botanicals...

Zosimos Botanicals is a lovely Green business that handcrafts their line of mineral makeup and skincare products in small batches using gentle plant-based raw materials that are also chemical-free and toxin-free. And, oh oh! ...their make-up is made in their 100% Wind Powered studio! :) They also pack their orders in reused packaging, they give back to communities, and use suppliers that use sustainable harvesting practices and organic ingredients. They also have a really easy way for fellow Vegans to check out which of their products are vegan and which are not (which I'm pleased to say, the vast majority are).

First, I have to share my favorite product of theirs; their "Natural Black Eye Pencil". Words cannot express how much I love this item! Eyeliner is one of my make-up must-haves so this product has made me an extremely happy chicky. I have found that so many "natural" eyeliner pencils either don't show on your skin or else have some chemical in them of which I do not approve. Zosimos' Eyeliner pencil is a dream come true! It's a beautiful deep matte color that goes on smooth, holds all day and actually shows! It's soft, smudges and blends great if you so choose or makes a solid smooth line as well. Super bold and sexy! Absolutely love love love it! They also have a ton of other eye pencil colors to choose from and, from such a positive experience with the black, makes me want to try many more. The other liner I just love is the cream shadow of "Natural Black." Apply it with an eyeliner angled brush and you have a beautiful solid black liner.

I've had the pleasure of trying several of their eyeshadows, both powdered and cream-formulas. They are beautiful and subtle, perfect for that more "au-natural" look or bold statements. I'm a big fan of soft colors and browns and Zosimos has so many to choose from that I want them all. Their "Branch" and "Bronze" are two favorite brown-shades, couple these with the eyeliner pencil and the "Black Shimmer" powder for the smokey undertone and you can create the perfect classy and sexy smokey eye look. The greens of "Avocado" and "Kelp" are both wonderfully subtle but incredibly eye-catching and flirty. Another favorite is the soft hue of "Blackberry" to which my 3-year-old sister was dazzled by; "your eyes are purple!" she exclaimed enthusiastically, looking as if she wanted to match. I'll wait to share that with her once she's much older ;). The cream-formulas are wonderful as well, heaven in eye-shadow form. They go on super smooth and feel light on my eyelids. "Fools Gold" in the cream formula is a beautiful and bold shade that I love with the "Natural Black" cream shadow as a liner and the Eye Pencil to highlight the inner eyes.
For both the cream and powders, Zosimos has "mini pinch" trial options as well, a great and easy way to try out tons of different colors and pick out your favorites!
I also just love "Tigerlily" in the powder shadow as a cheek highlighter or blush, just powder on a tiny pinch and blend it in. Beautiful!
Next on my list to try is their Eye Shadow Sticks!

Their concealers are another dream-like product. I am not one with much experience when it comes to concealers. I've fortunately gone through the better-part of my life without needing them, however with a recent move to a new climate my skin has been less friendly so I am grateful for this product. The ones I have tried are the cream-formula "Pot Concealers" which I have been rather enjoying. Of course, I hadn't thought of using a primer underneath and since my skin is quite dry, I find they look a tad dry on my face, as with all concealers. My quick fix has been to add a little facial-moisturizer as I apply them and it fixes it right up! They don't actually dry out my skin either, on the contrary I find that my skin always feels super soft while wearing them and even once I've washed my makeup off at the end of the day. Truely wonderful products! These are also available in mini-sizes so that you can give it a try first. And if you're unsure of which shade to purchase, they have several "tools" for comparing right on the website and if that doesn't work their staff is also extremely helpful.
I am interested to try the powder-base "Mineral Foundation" and the primer in the future.

Lips lips lips. They have some wonderful colors for lipsticks, lip and cheek tints, lip balms, lip pencils, and, my favorites, lip gloss. They are lovely on the lips and have some bold and fun color while still maintaining that subtle flirtiness all at once. My favorites? The lovely red hue of "Garnet" and the soft pinky-plum of "Black Cherry."

I hate that heavy feeling you sometimes get with makeup, no matter how much or little you are wearing. I love love Zosimos because their makeup feels light and wonderful on my skin. As mentioned, at the end of the night when I've washed it all away, my skin still feels amazing, even better than the start of the day. Just goes to show that you don't have to sacrifice gorgeous beauty products to be healthy!

As a whole this company is simply amazing and I highly recommend them! Customer service is fabulous, the staff are super friendly and helpful and quick to respond to questions. They have so many more products to choose from as well! Tons more makeup products, skin care, body care, soy candles, perfumes, hair care, and more that'll entice you into checking out their website. Oh! And they also have Bamboo Vegan Cosmetic Brushes! :)

So what are you waiting for? Order your Zosimos products today! :)

Peace & Love

☯ What's in my Closet: Orange Dipped in Chocolate by Herbolution ☯

I have already mentioned how much I love Herbolution. They are an amazing little company run by some wonderful people, containing some of the most amazing body products I have had the pleasure of using. I think it is safe to say that I have a healthy addiction ;) and my body loves the organic and healthy ingredients.

I tried their "Dipped Orange in Chocolate" Body Polish in the sample size over christmas and just fell completely in love. While the scent immediately won me over, the scrub is also simply amazing, with a wonderful exfoliating effect combined with the moisturizing benefits of cocoa butter to leave my skin silky smooth and beautiful. However, my love for the yummy orange-chocolate combination drove me to approach the lovely Sasha and Veronika of Herbolution about making a body butter and body spray. Being the wonderful people that they are, they made the products and I am very excited to be the first to try them!

When my package arrived I'll admit that I may have squealed like a little girl. As usual, I was delighted by their amazing efforts to be as earth-friendly as possible. From the recycled box, banana-paper invoice and note, biodegradable peanuts and wrapping, and the friendly glass-jars the products come in, this company rocks! Opening the new products was like christmas morning all over again, enthralled by the aspect of new yummy scents and products to indulge in. My senses were immediately humming in the playful fragrance of sweet orange and rich chocolate. So good it is tempting to eat--although I don't recommend it ;).
The body butter is made with lovely and enriching aloe butter, jojoba oil and other healthy and beneficial organic ingredients. As with all of their body butters, it is such a wonderfully rich moisturizer that is also filled with the nourishment of vitamins. The butter melts on the skin upon contact while that lovely aroma fills your nostrils and even the driest skin can feel relief from their natural and nourishing ingredients.
The body spray is perfect as well, the blend of scents is so yummy I can't help use the stuff all day and make everyone around me smell it too.

I can't put into words just how much I love these new products. Chocolate and orange...you can't really go wrong with that combination. Throw in the fact that Herbolution makes products that work, are chemical-free, good for you and good for the planet and, well, you just can't go wrong here.
If you haven't yet, now is your chance to jump on their etsy shop and indulge yourself. I promise you won't regret it. ;)

Peace & Love,
xo

☯ What's in My Closet; Madd Style Cosmetics!! ☯

Many of you know that I have been on a mad hunt for amazing and safe cosmetics. In my very picky hunt I have indeed found companies that meet my approval and I will be sharing them with you over the next several weeks. :)

What will you find at Madd Style?

Upon entering the Etsy shop, you are immediately drawn in by the huge and adorable Sugar-skull icon and colorful banner. This alone compells me to explore further, because of that perfect mixture of fun, pretty, and punk. I am very happy to say that I was not disappointed.

The fun and creative names of the cosmetics add that extra wonder to the wide selection of dazzling colors, and to the whole shopping experience. Hell yes, I'll take a lil "Kick-Ass" in my order ;).

You'll discover a wonderful selection of cosmetics that are high-quality, safe, effective, and that are free of of talc, bismuth, harmful fillers, or any animal by-products. All of the products are Vegan and 100% cruelty-free, so you can sleep peacefully knowing that no animals were harmed in the making of these beautiful cosmetics.

The tantalizing selection of Eye Pigments left me sitting in front of my computer screen for hours trying to decide which ones I wanted in my immediate collection. But I'm certainly not going to complain ;). The shadows are beautiful and you can make them as subtle or as vibrant as you'd like depending on your application. They mix great and are perfect for any look. Coming back to that lovely punky-edge, the colors are simply too much fun and will make you want to be extra bold at even the most "formal" of occasions.
I love the darker brown shades, such as "Dirty Beats" and the lovely plum-purple undertones of "Cruisin for a bruisin." To the wilder side of the color spectrum, I'm in love with purples like "Mondo" and "Electric Koolaid"; blue hues of "Jive Talk" and "Vortex"; the gorgeous green of "Ecto Cooler"; and of course, that lovely red tone of "Kick-Ass". One of my favorites in the collection however is "Cloud 9"; a beautiful silver-blue that stands out on its own or accents beautifully when blended with other pigments.

But the awesomeness does not end at Madd Style's bold eye pigments. The shop also provides some lovely "Lip Service" to treat your lips, including some yummy smelling lip-balms and lip-gloss.
I want to take a moment here to talk about lip-balms. I don't know about you, but I have found that most lip-balms do not do their job. They often end up drying out my lips instead of actually moisturizing them, resulting in a constant need to reach for the very thing contributing to the dryness of my lips. This has made me generally stay away from them. However, I was delightfully surprised when I tried Madd Style's Lip Balms. These do what they are supposed to do and they smell simply amazing! With ingredients including shea and cocoa butter, healthy oils and vitamin E, you know they'll treat your lips right. I was treated to "Cherry Bomb", "Iced Mocha", "Jack Frost" and my personal favorite "Pumpkin King."
The "Uber Boss Lip-Gloss" is fantastic! It is subtle yet vibrant all at the same time and, once again, smells like heaven and is rich with good-for-you ingredients that will keep your lips looking supple and fabulous. From a girl who doesn't wear a whole lot of lip-gloss, I can't stop using this one! The one I have is "Knock Off" and I just love it!

In a world full of nasty chemical cosmetics, it is well worth treating your skin right with beautiful and safe cosmetics.
So what do I think of Madd Style? Pure love!
As if the products weren't enough to make this company awesome, Mo, the lovely woman behind the solo-operation is as equally fantastic as her cosmetics. The customer service is amazing, helpful and friendly, and an absolutely pleasant over-all experience.

As stated in her shop "100% VEGAN 100%. WORTH IT!"
I couldn't agree more.

Peace & Love

☯ What's in my Closet: Shampoo & Conditioner!! ☯

With so many chemical products out there and shampoos and conditioners claiming to be "organic" or "natural" but that remain loaded with chemicals still, what is a person to do?

I have searched high and low for healthy shampoos and conditioners and stumbled upon this brand in a grocery store one day that I feel is worth sharing that I use. They meet my approval for a good, safe, and healthy option that Works! I can even get them in Bulk at my local co-op grocery store! Pure win!

From Carina Organics...

Pure & Natural "Daily Moisturizing Shampoo"

I love this shampoo and I have to say that I have no complaints. It has a subtle scent and great lather. A little goes a long way! Plus, packed full of Organic ingredients and you can easily read the ingredient label without questioning or trying to pronounce things that simply shouldn't be in beauty products.

Pure & Natural "Daily Light Conditioner"

I have been using this brand for over a year now after discovering them and have found that they work great. I've also been buying it in bulk so I haven't looked at the ingredients in a while. They are completely safe and good for you. My only complaint and realization upon re-reading the ingredient list is that there IS Beeswax in it. :( So as a Vegan I'm sad to discover this. Until I run out of what I have I will continue to use it but I will be on the hunt for a new Conditioner that is Vegan to share with you all once I find and try one!
Otherwise the product does work great. And like the shampoo, has a nice subtle scent that isn't over-powering.

Of course, I am always on the hunt for new amazing safe products, so... have a brand that you use that you want to share? Please do! I will be sure to check it out!

Peace & Love

☯ What's in my Closet: Face Care ☯

So, still on the topic of facial care ;) ...

Seriously, try the tips in my last post, you will notice a world of difference on your skin!!

Now, what do I use on my face?

Face Care:

Terresentials Fragrance-free Organic Facial Toner and Lotion. These products are amazing and well worth the cost! A little goes a long way as well! I am crazy about the toner and the lotion, but for some reason not so much about the cleanser. I am honestly not sure why. But I do highly recommend trying their products! They even have a Fragrance-free Facial Care Sampler. Their products are some of the very best I have ever found, with certified organic ingredients and absolutely no harmful chemicals! Pure Win! ^_^

Herbolution's Organic Raspberry Face Scrub. I know I already mentioned this one, but I am again as it is part of my face care routine. It is my favorite cleanser that I have used, plus all of Herbolution's facial scrubs are superb! They work amazing! My face loves them!

Make-Up:

I am currently using good but not great makeup for the most part :(. I am on the hunt for new ones to try and will be sure to share some better ones with you all as soon as I have actually tried them :).

I don't use cover-up or foundation really ever. At the moment I very occasionally use "Organic Wear" blush, and my skin almost always breaks out soon afterwards. I do not recommend it. Although it claims to be "all natural" it scores not so great over at Skin Deep.
I use Gabriel Color Black Mascara and Eyeliner. It is lower on the hazard scale but still not as clean as I'd like it to be, although I still highly recommend it over almost anything you can find in stores.
Eye Shadow is another that I am now on the hunt for new ones. I used to use Glittersniffer Cosmetics because they originally claimed to use good ingredients when they were on Etsy. They have a new website and there seems to be a change in their ingredient list that don't score very well at Skin Deep either--ingredients that I would personally avoid. It is too bad because they had some awesome colors that I loved. They are, however, Vegan and much better than your conventional eye shadows in stores. So, again, definitely choose them over most others.

I will do a new "what's in my closet" post once I have some new make up products that are up to my standards and that I would like to fully support. ;)

Peace & Love,
xo

☆ What's Going On: Face Care ☆

The topic of facial care has come up a lot lately, so this post is a bit of a double-sided one. Which is good, right? ;)

Firstly, I hear a lot of complaints about bad skin complexion, breakouts, etc. Now, I have to be completely honest here, I have pretty good skin, and have been fortunate enough that it's pretty much always been this way. However, that does not mean that I don't have advice or pointers to share. I can tell you what I have heard from others and what I have learned myself.

I am not sure if my skin is good because I am just lucky or because I truly do take care of it. Or quite likely a lot of both. I eat very well and have never eaten a lot of greasy foods or junk food or high amounts of sugar. I have almost Never worn cover-up or blush or any kind of make up on my face (I'm not talking about eye shadows or mascara), even when I first started wearing make up back as a teenager. I use all natural cleansers and lotions on my face as well, which I KNOW is a huge helper for ANYONE.

So, that being said, here are my recommendations...

Don't put chemicals on your skin! I'm talking about your whole facial routine here. What you clean, tone, moisturize, and put on your face for make up all have an effect. All those chemicals add up and act like a toxin in your pores. It's really no wonder so many people have problematic skin when we are basically polluting it with our "beauty" products. I have posted previously about how horrible most beauty products are out there (Dying to Be Beautiful) so I don't need to go any deeper into that; they're full of chemicals, read ingredients!
When you stop using all those chemicals, your skin may get worse before it gets better. Why? Because it finally gets to detox. Just like when you do a cleanse for your body, it can be a bit rough for a few days. But once your skin is able to detox it will almost definitely get better.
From this point on, only use truly natural cleansers. Again, Read Labels! Don't just pick up anything that says "organic" or "natural" because that's not always the case (again, you can read more HERE).

Let Your Skin Breathe! Even if you are using natural makeup, it's good to allow your skin to actually breathe and be completely free of makeup. When you sleep is an obvious one, but you should also give yourself days through the week where you are makeup free, especially when it comes to cover-up and foundation.

Eat Well! People for some reason don't always make the connection between our skin and our diets but they are so closely connected, as everything with our bodies is. Eating crap all day acts as just another "polluter" to your body which, basically, leaks those toxins back out through your skin. Lots of sugar, greasy junk foods, processed foods (as they are packed with preservatives), and a lack of fresh vegetables and fruits can all be huge factors in your skin's appearance. Your diet should be high in fibre, fresh fruits and vegetables, and other essential vitamins. Omegas can be great for your skin as well.
Also, drink lots of water! It helps to cleanse your body and therefor your skin! :)

Environmental Polluters. Ok, so this one may be harder to avoid. Depending where you live can make a huge difference on your skin's appearance. Live in a big city with lots of pollution? Chances are you're going to have a harder time keeping your skin at it's best. But that doesn't mean you can't do all of the above.

Tap Water. This is likely the biggest one that is over-looked, but the water you clean your face in can make a difference if you have super sensitive skin. We'd like to think that all of our water is good and clean, but the truth is not pretty. The majority of municipalities add Chlorine and Fluoride, while the water also contains other contaminants that end up in our drains (such as PCBs, THMs, heavy metals). A water filter added to your tap can make a difference. We have one on our shower-head which is nice for at least the longest period I spend submerged under water.

Simple pointers that can make a HUGE difference, especially the first three tips. Try them! You may be pleasantly surprised. ~_^

Peace & Love,
xo
